Matt’s longest ultra to date is 50km with 2,000m of elevation. APEX Everest is a different beast entirely.
“APEX is full of firsts for me: my first 100km+ event, more than double the distance I’ve raced before, over four times the elevation gain, and my first time running through the night.”
Ask him about quitting, and the answer is simple:
“To be honest, quitting isn’t in my vocabulary.”
“Over the last three and a half years I’ve lost around 20kg, gone from being overweight and out of breath walking to the local shops, to taking on mountain ultras — and battled my fair share of injuries along the way.”
“One difficult moment on the trail doesn’t compare to everything it took to stand on the start line. I just keep moving forward, one step at a time.”
He’s doing this for the Huntington’s Disease Association, his wife, and their North Lincolnshire HDA support group — and everyone living with Huntington’s, including the families and carers alongside them.
“I’m also doing it for everyone who has donated, supported and believed in me, and to prove that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. If my journey inspires just one person to get active, believe in themselves, or support a cause like the HDA, then every mile is worth it.”
“If I can get through this, I’ll know that the biggest limits we face are usually the ones we place on ourselves.”
