Letchworth Rugby Football Club

Letchworth Rugby Football Club Letchworth Rugby Club is one of the oldest and most successful rugby union clubs in the Herts & Beds area. Players of all ages & abilities welcome.

Legends Lane is the home to Letchworth Garden City RUFC, one of the oldest and most successful junior rugby union clubs in the Herts & Beds area. We pride ourselves by fielding four senior sides every week and have thriving mini & junior sections. Our 1st XV lead the way in the area playing three leagues above other local clubs, and have been the Herts County Cup Champions for the past two seasons

running. We are also proud to be the home of the ‘Bravehearts’, the only team in the area for adults with learning disabilities. On Sunday mornings our pitches are full of children from the age of six to seventeen being coached our wonderful game. Men and women, the young and not (so) young meet together to be part of a rugby club whose history is as proud as its future is bright. So many of our current and past players who have had the privilege of wearing the ‘Black & Amber’ shirt give their time freely to enthuse, inspire and educate the children who are the future of Letchworth Rugby Football Club. One of the most pleasing things about ‘The Legends’ 2015 Herts County Cup Final victory was that 16 out of the 18 players used were home grown talent. That says a lot about the ethos and the vision of the club over the past 10 years. We have a thriving social scene too, and take great pride in our hospitality – supporters & social members are welcomed with open arms. Our pre-match lunches for 1st XV games and our regular sportsman’s dinners offer great food, great company and great entertainment. We often have live music in the Clubhouse on match days too. We are a truly community based club, and last year our charity balls raised £2,000 for North Herts Hospice and Macmillan. Whether you want an enjoyable day out with friends and family, to entertain your clients or to treat your work colleagues you will find a warm welcome here at the Club. We have excellent facilities, including four full size rugby pitches, a floodlit training area, the best in coaching and physiotherapy, a gym and a club shop. The Clubhouse has recently been refurbished and we are planning further improvements, including a refurbishment of our changing rooms and re-surfacing the car park. The future for Letchworth Rugby Club is bright both on and off the field. Come and join us! The is the Club's official page. It is a community resource for use by our members (senior, junior and mini players, parents, social members etc) and the local community (including potential new players, social members, sponsors etc). Please don't post anything that you wouldn't want your grandparent or grandchild to see. It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of another cherished member of our beloved club. 💛🖤

Terry Masters, or “Head Boy” as he was affectionately known, was for many years a Vice President and a tremendous supporter of Letchworth Rugby Club in his own understated and generous way. Many at the club will know of the Richie McCaw World Cup shirt proudly displayed on the clubhouse wall - one of the many quiet contributions Terry made over the years.

Although he moved in high circles within the City, Terry was always happiest among friends at the rugby club, enjoying a lunch, a sportsman’s dinner or sharing stories and laughter with his great friend Pete Marsden. Even in recent years, despite health setbacks, Terry continued to live life fully - devoted to business, social occasions and, above all, to his beloved wife Cheryl and family.

His 70th birthday celebration at the Liberal Club was a truly memorable occasion and perfectly reflected Terry himself: generous, warm, tasteful and full of good humour.

Terry’s funeral will take place at 12:30pm on Tuesday 9th June at St George’s Church, Norton (the modern church). Members are encouraged to wear club blazers and ties where possible.

The wake will follow at Letchworth Golf Club.

We send our deepest condolences to Cheryl, Charlotte and all of Terry’s family and friends. He touched the lives of many people at Letchworth Rugby Club and beyond, and he will be greatly missed.

El Prez

Edited: Please note the funeral and wake is Tuesday 9th June, not Monday 9th, as shared previously.

Sad news from the Club President
💛🖤

It is with great sadness that I share news of the passing of two much loved members of our club. Please also accept my apologies for the delay in this announcement, which has been due to a particularly busy period at the club with recent events and commitments.

Over the past month, we have lost Giles Cook and Chris Bennett - two very different characters, but both united by their love of Letchworth Rugby and the friendships that come with it.

Giles Cook - or “Cooky” as he was known to everyone, joined the club during the captaincy of Ian Christensen and went on to play in the first team for over eight seasons. A powerful back row forward, he relished carrying the ball and putting in big hits, and he played the game with real commitment and presence. Just as importantly, he was a natural leader, and many feel it was a great pity he never wore the skipper's armband, as he undoubtedly had the respect and qualities to do so.

Off the pitch, Cooky embraced everything the club stands for. He loved the social side (especially Ladies Day!) and was simply a great person to have around. His sudden passing at just 49 has come as a huge shock to us all. The incredible turnout at his funeral earlier this month showed just how many lives he touched and how highly he was regarded.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Debi and daughter Ava at this incredibly difficult time. The club will be planning a memorial for Giles over the coming year so that we can honour him properly.

We were then saddened further to hear of the passing of Chris Bennett, only a week after Giles. Chris first played for Letchworth back in 1974 and was a fine all-round sportsman. Later moving north, he became a hugely valued member of Sandbach RFC, where he spent nearly thirty years.

Despite the distance, Chris never forgot his roots. His motorhome was a familiar and very welcome sight back at the club, and many will remember his pre-lunch bottles of champagne and the warmth and generosity he brought with him. He remained part of the Letchworth family throughout.

We send our sincere condolences to his wife Kirsteen and to Teah and Rai. There will be a celebration of Chris’s life at our Folk Festival on Sunday 26th July, where friends old and new will have the opportunity to come together and remember him.

These moments remind us just how strong and far-reaching our rugby community is. Giles and Chris will both be greatly missed, but their stories, their friendships and their impact on the club will not be forgotten.
