Let’s have a dedicated moment to appreciate modern ballistic apps, shall we?
For those who aren’t familiar with the features of Applied Ballistics Quantum, we strongly recommend giving it a go!
A precision-built 22LR is not only fun, but also a great training tool — 100 m with 22LR is almost exactly equivalent to 400 m with 308Win in terms of flight time, drop and wind drift. But having a powerful ballistic field calculator makes it particularly interesting and rewarding.
Using Lapua ammunition as an example, with Quantum’s CDM drag model:
- Scope zeroed at 50 m, 100m range with 2.5 mrad elevation set on turret. Windage at 0.
Impacts were 0.15 mrad high → true elevation 2.35 mrad → Quantum solver error: 0 mm.
- Wind measured with a Kestrel Elite, direction 210°. Group center was 0.34 mrad to the right → Quantum solver difference: 2 mm.
A 1m/s (2 mph) change in same direction wind speed would shift impact 1.3 mrad horizontally ("Wind 2", gust, in Quantum)
Very nice, but isn’t even the best part:
The WEZ tool, with its visual impact prediction, can really work like a portable crystal ball. 🔮 It predicts impacts based on the known uncertainties set as input values. And some of these can be measured quite precisely:
- Muzzle velocity variation: SD 3.4 m/s, measured directly with a chronograph (22-shot string in my case)
- Wind-speed variation / uncertainty: 1 m/s
- Rifle accuracy: 0.17 mrad (based on a 15-shot group at 50m)
- Bullet drag variation: 2% (valid with good quality 22LR ammunition)
And voilà! The predicted simulated 100m group look remarkably similar to the actual group - any distance, calber and target size can be simulated as well. Happy Days!
