Athy Wheelers Cycling Club

Athy Wheelers Cycling Club Local cycle racing club in south kildare. All levels welcome, leisure cyclists to competitive natured racers! Yet.

The Athy Wheelers Cycling Club has been set up as a means to bring the sport of cycling back to the community of Athy. The intention of the club is to provide the opportunity to those who wish to participate in cycling as a leisure pursuit, to keep fit, or, for the more competitive, to compete in cycling races, such as the local provincial league, up to national open races and stage racing for tho

se who wish. The Wheelers is a re-incarnation of the old cycling club which used to be in the town, but disbanded in the early 90’s. it was borne from an idea of two likeminded people, John Fox and Seán Power. Both noticed that there were a lot of people in the town who cycle as both a pastime, and competitively, and wanted to give those people a chance to do it locally, instead of having to travel to Naas, Kilcullen or Carlow to participate. The club has been set up with a racing focus, but is committed to developing a leisure aspect, where people can meet and socialise while enjoying the local heritage and the fresh air while out on their bikes. The racing element of the team is currently taking part in the Cahill Cycles Inter Club League this summer. The club will also be hosting two races as part of the league this year, on the 6th of June, beginning and ending at the Moat of Ardscull, and on the 4th of July, where the club will host the league’s 17km time trial stage, on the new link road. Already, the club has entered two races and have made a decent showing for themselves, though no significant results have been achieved. Membership starts from as little as €25 for leisure cyclists and €80 for competitive cyclists and includes a Cycling Ireland (CI) licence and insurance through CI.

Rian Cahill arrived at one of Ireland’s most prestigious road races the Shay Elliott Memorial in fine form having finished 3rd in Mondello on Tuesday and 2nd in the league on Thursday.
Unfortunately on Sunday things didn’t go to plan for Rian as a slow puncture on the last lap ruined any chances of moving further up the field.
Rian will be looking to bounce back on Thursday for round 2 of the league were he has made a strong start.

Shane Donohue was our sole representative at the Limerick City Centre Crit hosted by Greenmount Cycling Academy on Saturday evening.
It would be asking a lot for Shane to stay with the C1s on the night and he would lose contact quite early to the eventual winner Paul Kennedy who went on to lap the field.
Shane kept plugging away and formed a small group of C3s with Shane doing the majority of the work on the front, his efforts were rewarded in the end with a fine 8th place finish.
Another good result for Shane who has been in fine form recently.

The wheelers turned up in big numbers for the opening round of the league in Mondello hosted by the Committee.
A fast start from the scratch group brought all the groups together quite early in the race. A four man group was then formed including our two young guns Rian Cahill & Darragh Lazenby along with two Kilcullen riders. This group would stay away for the rest of the night and contest the honours. After numerous attacks Tadgh Killeen would break clear to claim victory solo, the remaining breakaway riders sprinted it out between themselves and Rian sprint once again was good enough to get the better of Tom Hughes and take second place. Darragh rolled over the line in 4th place to round off a fantastic performance in his first ever league race.
There was more points on the board for the wheelers with Gary Connell sprinting for 6th place from the bunch with Jake Bickerdike just missing out in 7th place.
A great start for the wheelers with 2nd,4th and 6th place on the night, all our riders played their part on a fast night of racing.

Rian Cahill 🥉 in Mondello
On a fast and furious night at Mondello Shane Donohue picked up where he left off at the Waller Cup going out in the break, this time he had company with 3 more C3s. They worked well together throughout the night but unfortunately to no avail as a surging C1 group would make the catch with half a lap to go. This brought Rian to the front of the race and he unleashed his explosive sprint down the home straight to claim 3rd place on the night, beaten only by two top tier C1s. A top result for Rian who is now mixing it with the big boys, for his efforts on the night Shane had to settle for 3rd C3.
The support cast played their part with Martin Cahill, Richie Whelan and Adrian Gannon putting in strong performances on the night.
Special mention to our junior Darragh Lazenby who with every passing week is getting stronger and stronger and doesn’t look out of place in the group.
The Wheelers will be back at Mondello on Thursday for the first round of the Kildare Carlow Laois Inter Club League.
