Here’s how we would spend them 👇

1️⃣ HOUR ONE: GET LOST IN THE OLD TOWN
⠀
Start at the Alameda viewpoint for one of the best photos of the Cathedral
⠀
Then walk through Porta Faxeira, Rúa do Franco, Praza do Obradoiro, Praterías, Quintana and Cervantes
⠀
Cobblestone streets, historic churches, centuries-old university buildings and stone arcades
⠀
Don’t try to see everything
⠀
Just walk, look up and let Santiago do its thing
⠀
2️⃣ HOUR TWO: THE CATHEDRAL FROM ABOVE

Visit the Cathedral and climb to its rooftops
⠀
Walking above the towers with the old town beneath you is easily one of the best things to do in Santiago
⠀
Book your rooftop ticket in advance because visits have a fixed entry time
⠀

And yes, in some cases, continuing the Camino by bike can be a great alternative

But every injury is different
⠀
If you’re in pain, have a serious injury or you’re not sure what’s going on, the first step should always be to speak with a medical professional

Cycling is not automatically the right option for everyone

You need to understand your own limits, listen to your body and make a responsible decision

The Camino de Fisterra and Muxía is the only official Camino route that starts in Santiago de Compostela, exactly where the others finish
⠀
Here’s what you should know before continuing:
⠀
📍 THE FIRST PART IS THE SAME
⠀
Both routes leave from Praza do Obradoiro and share the first stages:
⠀
Santiago → Negreira: 20.9 km
⠀
Negreira → Olveiroa: 34.3 km
⠀
Shortly after Hospital, the Camino divides and you must choose Fisterra or Muxía
⠀
🌅 OPTION 1: FISTERRA
⠀
There are approximately 89 km from Santiago to Fisterra
⠀
The official walking stages continue:
⠀
Olveiroa → Corcubión: 20.7 km
⠀
Corcubión → Fisterra: 14.2 km
⠀
The final destination is Cabo Fisterra, with its lighthouse, the Atlantic Ocean and the famous Camino “Kilometre Zero”

🌊 OPTION 2: MUXÍA
⠀
There are approximately 87 km from Santiago to Muxía
⠀
The official final stage from Olveiroa to Muxía is 32.7 km and finishes at the Santuario da Virxe da Barca, beside the Atlantic

🚲 OPTION 3: VISIT BOTH
⠀
Fisterra and Muxía are connected by an official 28.7 km stage, passing through small villages and coastal landscapes
⠀
So no, you don’t necessarily have to choose

Continue collecting stamps along the route
⠀
In Fisterra, you can request the official Fisterrana certificate at the Municipal Pilgrim Hostel or Tourist Office by presenting your stamped pilgrim credential

The official distances and difficulty levels are designed primarily for walkers. Some sections include trails, steep climbs and technical terrain, so choose an MTB or e-bike suitable for the route and check cycling alternatives before each stage

NOW WHAT?

Taking the traditional photo in Praza do Obradoiro is only the beginning.

If you’ve finished the Camino de Santiago by bike, save this guide and take time to discover what’s inside
⠀
1. ENTER THE CATHEDRAL
⠀
Access to the Basilica and the tomb of Saint James is free
⠀
Enter through the Puerta de Platerías, open daily from 7:00 to 21:00. On summer Saturdays, it closes at 20:30
⠀
Backpacks are not allowed and tourist visits are suspended during religious services
⠀
2. FOLLOW THE PILGRIM TRADITIONS
⠀
Walk behind the Main Altar and climb the steps to embrace the statue of Saint James
⠀
Then descend into the crypt beneath the altar, where the silver urn containing the remains attributed to the Apostle is kept
⠀
This is considered the true spiritual destination of the Camino
⠀
3. SEE THE PÓRTICO DE LA GLORIA
⠀
Master Mateo’s Romanesque masterpiece can only be visited with a timed ticket
⠀
The standard visit costs €15, or €12 for accredited pilgrims, and includes access to several Cathedral Museum spaces
⠀
A limited number of free tickets are also available daily between 16:00 and 17:30, but they must be booked in advance
⠀
Photography, backpacks and pilgrim poles are not permitted inside
⠀
4. WALK ON THE CATHEDRAL ROOF
⠀
Yes, you can walk across the historic rooftop and visit the Torre de la Carraca
⠀
The guided visit offers one of the best panoramic views over Santiago de Compostela
⠀
Tickets cost €15, or €12 for accredited pilgrims, and advance booking is highly recommended
⠀
5. ATTEND THE PILGRIM MASS
⠀
The Pilgrim Mass is currently celebrated every day at 7:30, 9:30, 12:00 and 19:30
⠀
