Before I started freediving, I thought it was all about holding your breath and mastering the right technique. I wasn’t wrong; those are important components, but what I didn’t realize is how much it’s also about deep physical and mental relaxation, trust, and patience.
When I couldn’t equalize, I honestly thought something was wrong with me (or at least with my ears or tongue!) and that I’d never get it right. After the first day, I went home and practiced equalizing for two hours in front of the mirror… then went to sleep thinking, I should probably quit. I can’t do it.
So on the last day of the course, my teacher took it really slow with me. We went out into the open water and honestly, it felt like I did at least 20/25 dives that day. One after the other — persistence, patience, and permission to learn from my mistakes. I managed to equalize but only to around 10 meters. I was ready to give up when Alejandro said, “One more dive and then we’ll go have lunch.” And that was the one — a 13-meter dive.
It might not sound like much, but OH MY, I WAS SO HAPPY! That was back in November, I then went and lived in Egypt for 4 months and trained more because I loved it THAT MUCH!
The biggest lesson I took away from this is patience and permission to not do perfectly right away. I’m so proud of me and my inner child who felt the fear and did it anyway - because fear is just courage becoming known.
Here’s to the power of surrendering control, to patience, and to remembering to have fun. When I let go the NEED to go deep, I was able to let go and everything came together. 🩵
