It may be difficult, but it is quite simple. A coach assesses, models and directs humans from one point to another point:

Assessment - the use of tests to reveal reality and speak truth. Model - the use of visual, tactile and verbal cues to show ideals and standards. Direct - the use of envisioning to create hope and course correct. If we all knew the truth, met the standards, and stayed on cour

se in our lives we would never need coaches. But alas, we all fall short. Every one of us should have a coach in our lives. My coaching philosophy knits together over 20 years of experience in the field of fitness - starting as wrestling assistant, then personal trainer, then teacher & researcher, then CrossFit. I believe coaching is an art as much as a science; one must grow in both areas to be effective. And the less balanced (i.e. too much science relative to art, and visa versa), the less effective you are as a coach. I also believe that we humans have six parts that make us human, each part forming a wedge like the God-designed, strongest shape - a hexagon. Those of you familiar with the past years of my journey in Egypt, understand this as the orange Proactive ‘nut’. The wedges are: physical, nutritional, mental, relational, spiritual, and emotional. When the wedges are built, layer upon layer in an even manor then the nut is harmoniously at it strongest. This is optimal, ideal. But alas, we are not ideal. At least not until we get to heaven. Why I coach. The reason I coach is also simple: I see the vast need in my own life, and in those I come into contact with every day, to be healthy. I do believe God has directed me to be a coach, and I want to do it well. The way I do that is to listen to God’s voice in my heart, so that I can assess, model and direct you better. It is in that listening that I can create, play, and work. I am not inspired without it. If this sounds strange to you, I would understand, but it may be the very thing holding you back! Regardless, you do not need to agree with my beliefs to benefit from where I have been and what I can share with you. But I also will not present to you a partial package. My coaching addresses all 6 wedges, none will be left unturned if you work with me. Not everyone wants to be healthy in my definition of the word. Not everyone wants to slowly build on each wedge, layer upon layer. We are either impatient or biased. We either want to skip ahead too fast with too much volume or intensity, or we spend too much of our time exclusively in a couple of the wedges ignoring the others. This is human nature - the part that needs coached!

At times it’s helpful to have a focus phrase. Sometimes it’s how I feel that day, but others it is an effort to actually get out of the mood I’m in! Today it was the former so I said to my self: “smooth not snappy” and intentially smoothed things out (at least in my mind).

Other times I’ve used simple phrases that really smack me in the face to wake me up out of the funk I’m in. Something like “Yella”, or “get it” or “snap that”.

Here’s the point: you have to know what time it is for you, now in the simple present. It is not always go time. Likewise it’s not always time to follow your feelings of fatigue. Daily training, lifting or moving with intention helps us learn who we are and what we need, right now.
