Day 4 in Noganosh Lake Provincial Park.

Up at the crack of stupid to break down camp, load the canoe, and head out. What was supposed to be a four-hour paddle turned into nearly six, thanks to tired shoulders and a few too many casts along the way.

Halfway between the first and second portageā€”right where a 40-meter pullover used to be years backā€”I crossed paths with two paddlers heading in for their first time. They pulled out the exact same Lost Lakes maps I had been navigating with, so I pointed out a few solid campsites and productive fishing spots to help get them sorted.

Stopped for lunch at the head of the final portage before tackling the triple carry along Smokey Creek. Once back on Kawigamog Lake, the final leg to Flemingā€™s Landing meant dodging close to a dozen bass boats flying past at wide-open throttle.

Pulled the boat out, made the five-hour drive home, and immediately pivoted to packing gear for a guided trip the next day.

Day three in Noganosh Lake Provincial Park.

Woke up to a cool morning and mist on the water. With no plans to change camp, I took my time making a hearty breakfast over the camp stove while keeping warm by the fire.

After finding a thunderbox that belongs on the Bill Wilkie top 10 list, I got out on the water for some casual exploring and fishing. Found a beautiful little tucked-away bay that served as both a great fishing hole and a peaceful lunch spot, giving the Nova Craft Canoe a long lead so she could graze freely in the pasture.

A mid-afternoon snooze in the hammock, a few more evening bass on Noganosh Lake, and a venture down a hidden channel that seemed to go on forever. Felt like being transported back in time.

I'm not one to complain about rain. In fact I often enjoy paddling on the water when there is a gentle rain all around me. I've got all the gear to keep me dry, and this rain in particular was on a warm day.

Day two in Noganosh.

The morning started out glass calm. I almost stayed put to base camp, but after a steady stream of float planes and motorboats shattered the quiet, I packed up and pushed toward Noganosh Lake.

Then the wind hit.

It took everything I had just to grind out 6 km into punishing headwinds. The first campsite I checked was useless for a hammockā€”though it served well enough for a quick lunchā€”and fighting another 1.5 km toward my backup site proved impossible against the gusts.

Beaten by the lake, I turned around and paddled back to Smokey Lake. The fallback site was completely new to me, and it turned out to be the absolute best spot yet for the hammock. Sometimes the lake makes the call for you.

Day one on my trip to Noganosh was a wet and windy affair, just like the worst back to school week I remember as a child. However this time the weather didn't dampen my spirits.

I had hoped of paddling straight into Noganosh Lake, but the heavy wind and whitecaps on Smokey Lake, and me solo paddling a Nova Craft Canoe Prospector 16 made that an impossibility. If I had had a partner in the bow, and a little more weight, I feel like we could have pushed through. Solo paddling, I called it early and tucked into a familiar campsite I once shared with Jacob Forgeron for night one.

Once I was done making camp (in the rain), and making dinner (in the rain... Oh and I forgot to bring gas), the rain finally broke and I was able to finish š‚ššš¦š©šžš« š‚š”š«š¢š¬š­š¢š§šš book, The Space Between the Lakes (such a perfect title, both in the literal sense, and the metaphorical).

ā€‹Taking advantage of the holiday to practice what we preachā€”shouldering the yoke, loading the pack, and heading deep into the backcountry for some portaging and quiet water.

ā€‹While Iā€™m off-grid, Josh is running operations out of our Bingemans location on a limited schedule from Tuesday, September 8th through Sunday, September 13th. All outings will be call-to-book only during this stretch, and Grace will be by the phones to get you set up.
