RDNO Area D representative Rick Fairbairn stopped by to present a cheque to the Lumby Air Force to support the Lumby Air Races which create entertainment for the Lumby Days and goes towards prizes for the pilots in the society's annual fund-raising hang gliding and paragliding competition. Society director Randy Rauck thanked the RDNO and the Lumby Days Society for their continued support!
About the Lumby Air Races: The Lumby Air Races is a recreational, and educational cross-country triangle flying event for Hang Gliders and Paragliders. It is the main annual L.A.F. Fundraiser that helps support the non-profit society which develops and maintains local flying sites and designated landing areas. Participating flyers are challenged to complete GPS official triangles above Lumby from launches on Coopers and Saddle Mountains to entertain visitors to the annual fair. Over the week long competition, scores are awarded for 10km, 25 km, 50km and 100km triangles. Pilots must be registered to win prizes.

Congratulations to all the pilots who flew in the Lumby Air Races competition, and before, during and after Lumby Days! The Flyers and Volunteers participation and involvement around the Flight Park made it fun for all the spectators and organizers! 😁🥰

The Lumby Air Races had twenty-five paragliding and hang gliding pilots enter the competition this year which involved completing tasks set out each morning of the week-long event based on the wind and weather. Unfortunately, Saturday and Sunday of Lumby Days were not flyable due to wet conditions.

Winners had to fly a minimum 10-kilometre triangle above Lumby or earn points for completing other tasks such as distance, laps over Saddle Mountain (Friday evening) and personal best.
The Lumby Air Force thanks its event sponsors, Lumby Days and Regional District of North Okanagan Area D for contributing the prize money.
Nine trophies and awards totaling $1500 were given out on Saturday evening. The 2024 Lumby Air Races Winners were:

The Freedom Flight Park is pleased to announce that our very own Dave Underwood has won the "Michael Robertson Instructor of the Year" award from the Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association of Canada!

Dave has now been instructing for 7 seasons at the flight park and the number of graduates from paragliding has grown steadily year after year from 1 graduate in 2015 to 28 P2 pilots last year. Dave also instructs hang gliding and is one of only eight instructors in Canada who teach both sports and the only current one in BC.

Our Story

At the Freedom Flight Park we teach people how to fly paragliders, hang gliders and ultralights. Visit the Freedom Flight School to learn more about how you can be flying in less than one week!

We also offer tandem paragliding. If you’re interested we ask you to call ahead or book a time online: http://www.freedomflightschool.com/book-now.html

The flight park is open any flyable/teachable day (no rain and not too windy) from early May to mid October. Solo pilots are welcome to come and enjoy our skies with us.

The Freedom Flight Park in Lumby, BC is one of Canada's first dedicated hang gliding flight parks, established 1976. We expanded to accommodate ultralights and conventional aircraft in 1978 and paragliders later on.
