She didn't bring the baby to compete.

She brought the baby because
she had nobody to leave him with
and she needed to be here.

Her mother was supposed to come.
Her mother got sick Wednesday.

Priscilla looked at her entry.
Looked at the baby.
Made a decision.

She packed the carrier.

She warmed up in the back lot
with him against her chest.
He slept through the whole thing.

He has been to six events.

He has slept through five of them.

The one he didn't sleep through
he looked at the arena lights
with the specific expression
of a child encountering something
larger than anything they've seen.

She watched his face.

She thought:
he's going to grow up thinking this is normal.
Arenas. Horses. The smell of sawdust and leather.
Saturday mornings that start before dawn.

She thought: good.

She wants him to think it's normal.

She wants it to be his normal.

The same way it was hers.
The same way it was her mother's.

She handed him off to a competitor's wife
before her run.

She rode clean.

She came back.

He was still asleep.

She took him back into the carrier.

He made a small sound.

She said: "I know. Same time next month." 🤠
