Three times he finished second for the Canadian tie-down roping title. The fourth time, he refused to think about it.
Kyle Lucas grew up in Carstairs, Alberta, in a roping family. His father, “Smokin’” Joe Lucas, is a four-time Canadian champion and Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer, and a six-time NFR qualifier. His sister, Katy, is a former Miss Rodeo Canada and a Cowboy Channel staple. Joe helped Kyle get his first pro-caliber horse. Kyle won his first pro rodeo at 17, in Stavely, Alberta.
Then came the Canadian runner-up finishes. In 2016, in the CFR final against Shane Hanchey, he played it safe instead of really going after it, and it cost him. By 2018, battling Hanchey again, Kyle had already earned Hanchey’s respect. Hanchey said he knew Kyle would be around a long time.
Then he kept winning big checks. In January 2022, Kyle won the tie-down roping at the National Western in Denver with a 7.5-second run, and his sister interviewed him afterward. In 2023, he was second at the Calgary Stampede. In 2025, he won $12,000 at the Tucson Rodeo and the Lynn Beutler All-Around buckle.
Then came Edmonton. In November 2025, at Rogers Place, Kyle placed in four of five CFR rounds, split the win in Round 3, and won the aggregate. Then came the final run. The calf ducked left as he threw his loop. “It’s like a pool shot,” he said, “you gotta put a little English on it.” The time was 8.3 seconds, and he thought it might be good enough. Stran Dunham, in his second CFR, had to beat it. He didn’t.
Katy fought back tears as she interviewed her younger brother on the Cowboy Channel. Kyle had won his first Canadian title, with $72,786 for the year, after three runner-up finishes. He said he wasn’t telling himself “don’t win second place.”
Then, in December 2025, he made his first National Finals Rodeo. He was the only Canadian in the tie-down roping. Kyle finished third in Round 5 for $21,882. “Those guys in Las Vegas are wolves,” he said.
He and his fiancée, Kortney McReynolds, are building a home in Texas.
Nine CFRs. A first Canadian title. And a first trip to Vegas, at 31.
