Get Repost App • Maxi Meissner & Bhumi Yoga This past week something sweet happened.

Kellie, a fellow Mysore Yoga shala owner ( Shala Ashtanga Yoga Centre ) and Ashtanga practitioner from visited us for a few practices while in town. Yesterday we sat down and talked for a bit after practice.

And I found myself thinking that this is so rare. Really rare. To sit with someone who just really gets it. Who has been practicing for over a decade, who remembers the era of no yoga clothes and brands, who also started practicing before smartphones recorded everything and gave unsolicited advice on how to do everything in 20 different ways😄, who has also run her own Mysore shala for over a decade, who knows from the inside what this practice and this work actually is and what it asks of you.

We talked about how Ashtanga yoga asks real commitment in a culture that wants quick results and convenience, and how commitment is both its challenge and its gift.

We talked about how the Mysore way of practicing is just such a different model than what’s offered in most studios, not better or worse, just fundamentally different.

We talked about the difference between a shala and a studio.

We talked about how most Mysore shalas aren’t posh places, but spaces that are tended to with lots of care, where community comes together and a space that is being lived and breathed in.
(Door codes or knocks on the window anyone 👋❤️)

About the energetics, the breath, the bandhas and the depth that can only really be transmitted 1-on-1, and that gets lost when yoga becomes entertainment or when yoga becomes policed and nuance is lost (e.g. one thing is applied to all).

“SOMATIC” is everywhere right now—but what does a genuinely somatic practice actually feel and look like?

It may look less like adding another technique and more like changing the way you pay attention: noticing breath, sensation, effort, tension, and internal response rather than simply performing a movement from the outside.

This shift happens naturally with an Ashtanga-Mysore practice.
Ashtanga may feel primarily physical:
learning the sequence
building strength
working with alignment
developing stamina.

But that’s only the beginning
the practice move from how the posture looks to how it feels very quickly.

In Mysore-style practice, fewer external cues invite you to follow your own breath and develop greater internal awareness.

The Tristana method—breath, posture, and gaze—offers a steady framework for bringing attention into the present body and away from mental distraction.

Repetition refine your perception. As the sequence becomes more familiar, you begin to notice subtle differences in breath, muscular effort, balance, resistance, and mood.

The practice becomes less about achieving a shape and more about listening, responding, and adapting.

This doesn’t mean Ashtanga automatically regulates the nervous system or releases stored emotions. Those claims are often overstated, especially in wellness marketing. But practiced with patience, awareness, and respect for your individual needs, your ashtanga practice will support concentration, interoception, and a deeper sense of embodiment.

A somatic practice is not defined by the label. It is revealed in the quality of attention you bring to the body.
