Seibukan Karate Dojo - Edmonton We teach classes in traditional Okinawan karate in Edmonton. We also offer online classes for distance training. Drop-in is $15.

The Seibukan Karate Dojo is dedicated to the practice and teaching of Shorin-ryu Seibukan karate-do. Our lineage is impeccable, running back to Kyan Chotoku and embodied today by the head of Seibukan, Shimabukuro Zenpo Hanshi, 10th degree black belt, on of the most highly respected karate sensei in the world. Our instructors travel regularly to the Okinawa to train with him. We adhere to the vener

able Japanese precept that some crucial transformations of the mind and spirit can only be accomplished through disciplined physical practice. Training is intense, demanding, but very friendly and supportive. We run in-person classes three times a week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 1900-2030, and Saturday mornings 1000-1130. There are also online classes Monday and Wednesday evenings 1900-2000 MT. We have distance students in Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal, Vermont, and Belfast, Ireland. Tuition is $65/month month-to-month or $660 for one year ($120 discount). Online classes are $20/month for distance students. We are registered non-profit foundation and all instructors are volunteers. If you cannot afford the regular tuition, we ask that you pay what you can. No one who sincerely wants to learn will ever be turned away for financial reasons. In addition, all members are required to join Karate Alberta, which has annual dues of $35. There is also an annual fee of $10 to cover the dojo's Karate Alberta dues. While we have occasionally had a few children train with us and they are welcome, we are primarily an adult and young adult (12+) dojo. Younger children are welcome to train with a parent. Anyone who is interested in learning karate is invited to try a class at no charge.

Fūga 風雅 can be translated as "common ways with grace."

The difficulties of life are a mirror which shows the frequency and clumsiness of how we falter, despite our best efforts. But fūga is when we do not give up and keep working to overcome our falls from grace.

This is the fūga of our karate.

Some martial artists idolize Bruce Lee, but my dojo finds inspiration in Yo-Yo Ma, who said, "It was only through decades of musical exploration that I came to understand my responsibility as a human being."

None of us will ever be the Yo-Yo Ma of karate, but we seek the same understanding.

In our dojo, we mask when COVID or other respiratory virus levels are elevated. We do so because we respect science; because we are obligated to care for our community, especially the vulnerable; because masking is practice of discipline.

Other clubs feel differently, but this is our way of karate.

To paraphrase György Gábori, in a time when evils are most free, I teach a little community of people who come together to learn and honour a tradition that, just like immigrants everywhere, came from a distant place; a community of effort, humility, and mutual respect and care.

I am so lucky.

On this day in 2017, a gunman entered the Quebec City Mosque and opened fire, killing six people and injuring many more.

In 2026, when racism and other evils are rising in this country and across the world, we vow to stand up against Islamophobia and hate in our society.

Our Story

"Nantanreikan" is Japanese for "the Hall of Difficult Grace." We are dedicated to the practice and teaching of Shorin-ryu Seibukan karate-do. Our lineage is impeccable, running back to Kyan Chotoku and embodied today by the head of Seibukan, Shimabukuro Zenpo Hanshi, 10th degree black belt, and Dan Smith Hanshi, 9th degree black belt. Both are among the most highly respected karate sensei in the world, and our instructors travel regularly to the US and Japan to train with them. We adhere to the venerable Japanese precept that some crucial transformations of the mind and spirit can only be accomplished through disciplined physical practice. Training is intense, demanding, but very friendly and supportive. September to June, we run five classes per week: Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday morning. In the summer, we are on a reduced schedule, and days and times depends on our access to the building that houses our dojo.

Tuition is $50/month with a year’s commitment or $60 month-to-month. We are registered non-profit foundation and all instructors are volunteers. If you cannot afford the regular tuition, we ask that you pay what you can. No one who sincerely wants to learn will ever be turned away for financial reasons. While we have occasionally had a few children train with us and they are welcome, we are primarily an adult and young adult dojo. Anyone who is interested in learning karate is invited to try a class at no charge.
