Just wanted to remind everyone that there will be no practice tomorrow April 25, as i am out of town competing at the roller town sumo competition in Texas. Practice will resume May 2. If you have any questions just message.

Today was a group practice session, along with drafting teams for the competition, so far its been a great experience. I look forward to review the footage of my practice bouts.

One thing I've been working on is my use of the inside grip/underhook. Its a versatile tool that allows you actually both offensively and defensively. While maintaining a natural position and control.

Strength is important, but its not the only thing you need for a successful yorikiri. You also need to be able to control your opponent. Preventing them from escaping and keeping the pressure on them.

There was a solid attempt at a throw here, which is what I like to see from smaller guys. You can't bear an opponent bigger than you head to head, so you have to try to out move them and try to us their power against them. Sumo is simple for the big guys, but for small guys there tends to be a steeper learning curve as they need to rely on technical skill over raw strength.

This is just a good yorikiri, nothing fancy or special. Just a strong tachiai and good grips. I wish all my matches could be this simple. Yorikiri has become a big part of my game plan, as it works both as a hard offense move and a slower more grinding defense move.

This was a close finish, and we actually spent a few minutes reviewing it to determine the outcome. This goes to show how close finish can be in sumo, and how depending you interpret the rules can affect the outcome.

Also this is good example how a smaller opponent with a superior position can overcome the raw power of a larger opponent.

I've been really focusing on a more slow controlled style of sumo. Being more defensive and grinding. Using my size to control and pressure my opponent. Wearing them down, or waiting till they make a mistake that I can capitalize on. Here my opponent went for a grip change, moving to a deeper grip. That gave me the opening to close the gap, get low, and finish with yorikiri.

Being able to finish at the edge is an important skill in sumo. One of my favorite ways to finish an opponent on the edge is with a lift out. By lift your opponent you remove their ability to counter you, as their feet are no longer planted on the ground. Plus a successful lift out usually requires you to get your opponent upright and get under them. Thus also helps to remove their power and options for a counter.

This was a nice finish, showing that sumo isn't always about strength. Agility and timing plays a big role. Especially for lighter weights, but even for heavyweights Agility and timing can be the key to getting yourself out of a sticky situation.

Not my cleanest tachiai, but it felt good. I felt my tachiai coverall was flowing better this practice. Looking back on it, I think I was a little more relaxed. I wasn't as tense, so I was able to move more efficiently. I feel this is true especially in my arms as they felt like they were moving and getting in position better.

Its important to remember lead with the hands not the head when thrusting. You don't want to lean to far forward, as that focuses all your weight and momentum into your hands. Meaning if whatever your hands are pressed against suddenly disappears, it leaves you open to a slap down.

A good example of how thrusting can be a useful tool, especially to create distance, but at the same time leaves you lacking in options if you're opponent is able to close the distance. A good pusher thruster should always have a move ready if the fight goes to the belt.
