Keys to a backhand sauce pass (short distance):

1. Make an aggressive stickhandle from your forehand to backhand using respective weight transfer with your legs to give the puck the speed it needs to ramp up the blade.

2. Have your knees bent, elbows straight, & arms low to the ground- to increase the loft of the blade.

3. Hands need to stay off your body to give them room to move. This allows for the chipping/ sliding motion of the blade which is created by starting the stick slightly away from your body then pulling it in towards you. So that the puck will spin up & across your backhand towards the toe before it’s released. For righties the puck should spin counter clockwise while for lefties it should spin clockwise.

4. Unlike many other passes, you don’t shift your weight back towards the target here. This limits the energy transferred into the puck & shortens how far it will fly.

5. Like a fade away basketball shot this will not only add deception but also allow the bottom hand to follow through down the target line producing more accurate passes.

6. To keep the puck from wobbling/ knuckling in the air & subsequently bouncing more when it lands- follow through with the backhand of your blade straight up to the sky. Do not allow the toe of the stick to roll over/ the blade to close!
