We get tons of questions about bearings!
Hopefully this visual helps it make more sense.
Inside the inner and outer ring (race) steel or ceramic balls spin inside the bearings housing. Lubricant keeps the friction down and spinning smoothly.
Not all bearings are the same of course, but these are the basic components.
Most bearings the inner race is 8mm diameter nowadays.
-keeping bearings clean will help prolong their life.
-grime that works its way in will eventually prevent the bearing from rolling and wear the shape of the balls down from friction.
-always clean bearings with isopropyl alcohol, and allow to dry fully to prevent rust. Re lubricate to keep rolling smoothly.
I’m using Bones speed cream!
-removing the plastic caging is not always recommended and can be difficult to put back together sometimes. Do so at your own risk.
-it’s time for a clean or new bearings when they feel slow, gritty, like they catch a lot. Not rolling smoothly, are making noise like squealing or staticky.
We also offer a comprehensive hands on class on how to clean your skates and bearings that goes into more detail and different techniques
