A number of dead birds have recently been reported in our community.
While bird flu continues to be detected at low levels across the North and overall risk remains low, all citizens and community members are advised to follow these precautionary guidelines.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐨 𝐈𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝
• DO NOT TOUCH IT with bare hands.
• Leave it in place if possible and report it immediately to the authorities listed below.
• If it poses a risk to pets or people, do not touch it directly. Carefully use an instrument (like a shovel) to place the bird into a sealed plastic bag or container, then report it.
• Disinfect thoroughly: Wash your hands and any tools or surfaces that touched the bird with warm water and soap or disinfectant.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬
• 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭: Keep away from bird droppings, blood, feathers, or secretions.
• 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 & 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐬: Keep young children and pets away from dead birds or areas potentially contaminated by wild birds.
• 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: If handling birds or cleaning game, wear gloves and a mask in a well-ventilated area. Thoroughly wash clothing, tools, and footwear in hot, soapy water and disinfect afterwards.
• 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲: Ensure all poultry and eggs are fully cooked before eating.
• 𝐇𝐲𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞: Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Monitor your health for symptoms if you have been in areas with wild birds, and reach out to the Lands & Resources Department if you have any immediate concerns
