Such a cool feeling to teach a room of helping professionals how to regulate their nervous systems. :)
For two days at the Working Stronger Conference, we heard how deep the crisis runs for the people who help everyone else.
Dr. Jody Carrington • Psychologist • Author • Speaker , Roselle M. Gonsalves and Mary Ann Baynton, named it with so much clarity and heart.
I was grateful to be the one who got to add the practical tools to help people in these trying times.
In this photo, a room full of healthcare professionals, first responders, union leaders, and HR folks have their hands on their chests doing a rep together.
You could feel the shoulders drop.
Here’s how you can try it right now:
Place your hand on your chest. Perhaps you want to close your eyes so you can really focus in. Notice how your hand rises and falls with each breath.
If you can stay focused on just that for three deep breaths, you’ll notice a shift in yourself too. (If you try it... share with me in the comments what you notice)
When you feel that peace flood in... That’s your wise brain coming back online.
These reps are built for the moments between the crises, so the crises themselves become more manageable.
Try this a few times a day and you’ll notice how you now have space for curiosity... creativity.. clarity... calmness... (Basically all the things that Dr. Richard Schwartz says characterize our essential self).
And who wouldn’t want to be leading from that place?
Thank you for having me Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division and Centre for Su***de Prevention, CMHA.
Let’s keep lowering those shoulders.
