Why we use unilateral movements at Club Pilates 🤍

Working one side of the body at a time helps us find and correct imbalances that can be hidden when both sides work together.

Unilateral exercises can help us:
• Improve balance and stability
• Strengthen each side independently
• Identify and work through muscle imbalances
• Challenge your core to resist rotation
• Improve coordination and body awareness
• Build strength that translates into everyday movement

Because let’s be honest… sometimes one side thinks it needs to do ALL the work. 😂

WHY DO WE DO SWAN & SWIMMING? 🦢🏊‍♀️

You’ll often see these movements toward the end of a Club Pilates class — and there’s a reason we program them in.

These exercises challenge thoracic extension, posterior-chain strength, shoulder stability and whole-body coordination.

🦴 THORACIC EXTENSION
Swan and Swimming teach you to extend through your upper and mid-back with control. We want the thoracic spine to move, rather than relying on the lower back to create the movement.

💪 STRENGTHEN THE BACK OF THE BODY
Your back extensors, glutes and hamstrings work together to support you against gravity.

🪽 SHOULDER & SCAPULAR CONTROL
As your arms move, you’re practising control of the shoulder blades while maintaining a stable trunk.

🪑 COUNTERACT DESK TIME
Think about how much of your day is spent sitting — at a desk, in the car, on your phone or looking at a screen.

We’re often positioned with the body slightly rounded forward.

Swan and Swimming give us the opportunity to move in the opposite direction — opening the front of the body while strengthening the muscles that help support an upright posture.

🏊‍♀️ SWIMMING = COORDINATION
Opposite arm and leg movements challenge you to maintain spinal stability while your limbs move independently.

AND WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Good posture isn’t about forcing yourself to “sit up straight” all day.

It’s about having the strength, mobility and awareness to comfortably move and support your body in different positions.

So when you’re lying on your stomach thinking,

“Why are we doing tummy time “

Remember:

We’re moving the spine, strengthening the back and training your body to support you — especially after all that sitting.

That’s the Pilates method.

WHY DO WE USE THE PILATES BREATH? 🫁

Breathing happens automatically… so why does your teacher keep reminding you to breathe?

Because in Pilates, your breath is part of the movement.

🌬️ CONNECT TO YOUR CORE
A controlled exhale can help engage the deep abdominal muscles and support your trunk during movement.

🫁 SUPPORT RIB & THORACIC MOBILITY
Pilates breathing encourages expansion through the sides and back of the ribcage, helping you move your ribs rather than simply lifting your chest.

🎯 COORDINATE BREATH + MOVEMENT
Pairing your breath with movement gives you a rhythm to work with and can help you stay focused on what your body is doing.

💪 SUPPORT YOUR MOVEMENT
We often use the exhale during the more demanding part of an exercise. It can help you maintain abdominal connection while you move.

🧠 BRING YOUR FOCUS INWARD
Pilates asks you to concentrate. Paying attention to your breath gives you another way to slow down, connect and become more aware of your body.

AND WHY DID JOSEPH PILATES CARE SO MUCH ABOUT BREATHING?

Breathing was one of the fundamental principles of his method. He viewed purposeful breathing as an important part of developing control and improving movement quality.

But here’s the important part:

There isn’t one “perfect” way to breathe for every exercise.

Your teacher may cue a particular inhale or exhale because it supports the movement you’re doing — but you should never feel like you’re holding your breath just to get the exercise “right.”

So when we say “inhale… exhale…”

We’re not just filling time between reps.

We’re using your breath to help you move with more awareness, control and connection.

WHY DO WE LENGTHEN AT THE END OF CLASS?

You’ve worked your muscles, challenged your core and asked your body to move in ways it may not move during your everyday routine.

So at the end of class, we slow things down and create some length.

🧘‍♀️ BRING THE BODY DOWN
After a stronger part of class, slower stretches give you a chance to transition from working hard to a more relaxed state.

🦵 MOVE THROUGH YOUR RANGE
Stretches and Feet in Straps allow you to explore the movement available at your hips and legs without the same load you had earlier in class.

🎯 CONTROLLED MOBILITY
We’re not trying to force your body into a deeper stretch. We’re practising moving through your available range with control, alignment and awareness.

🩷 FEEL GOOD WHEN YOU LEAVE
That final stretch gives you a moment to check in with your body, breathe and notice how you feel compared with when you walked in.

AND FEET IN STRAPS?

The straps support the weight of your legs, giving you an opportunity to focus on hip mobility, pelvic stability and length through the legs while your body is supported by the carriage.

It’s the perfect way to finish what we started.

We strengthen → mobilize → lengthen → breathe.

Because Pilates isn’t just about how hard you can work.

It’s also about learning how to move well, recover and leave your body feeling better than when you arrived. ✨
