The club had a super busy weekend. 6 of our pilots and their wonderful crews, plus a bunch of club volunteers were at the Calgary Farmyard again on Friday evening.

Saturday saw some training action at the balloon port in High River, with both Cathy and Karl working towards instructor ratings. Karl got another short flight in that afternoon.

Sunday morning, Cathy, Shane, Doug and Karl met at the balloon port again for a flight. How many of you would want to try to fly a "sky hopper", like Shane had out today?

Bill and Katelynn got another training flight in, out of Medicine Hat! We will share a post from their crew :)

Thanks to Janice, Stacey, Heather, Shane, and Kelsy for the awesome photos of all the action.

This weekend some of our club members and friends met for the weekend at Raven River Hideaway for some time outdoors with the hope of getting some flying in. Saturday morning saw Shane go for a flight in Starburst, with lots of crew to help set up and chase.

Later that afternoon Karl and Bill got set up and inflated before gusty conditions led them to take down and pack up.

After dinner, early Halloween costumes came out and we even had a visit for the three bears! We also celebrated Walt's birthday with some cake. Darcy donated some of his amazing woodwork as some auction items for our 50th anniversary events.

Sunday morning saw some snow and more gusts so everyone took their time with breakfast, packing and goodbyes.

Thank you to Shane, Kelly and Heather for the photos from our weekend

After the impressive winds of yesterday, we managed to find a few hours of calm this morning and got the practical portion of our Introduction course done!

The morning started off watching Matt get set up for a flight, we then took our time getting Cotton Candy set up, talking over everything that was happening, the different parts of the balloon and putting into use the things they learned last week.

We tethered for a while, getting the participants and some of our awesome crew who had never been on a tether before up.

After a quick chat about conditions Shane took off with some of the new club members and we all met up a short time later for pack up.

It was a perfect morning for our practical session.

Thanks Emma, Heather and Kelly for documenting our morning.

This past week the Calgary Balloon Club ran our first "Introduction to Ballooning" course in a long time. The club used to run courses like these in years past to bring in new members and give them a a good start with what to expect when out with the balloons. This year we brought it back as part of our 50th Anniversary activities.

Topics covered included the history of ballooning, how balloons fly and descriptions of all the parts you need to make a balloon, a very brief introduction to the weather that affects balloons, crewing safety and we also chatted about all the different activities that the club does over a year.

The classroom portion of our course is now complete, next up we have a practical day planned. Stay tuned to find out how that goes!

Thanks to our new club members for your interest, our established members for your curiosity and help and our instructors and course committee for making this happen.
