We never lose the right to defend ourselves, but context and circumstances have a LOT to say about what we are justified in doing.
Fighting in the air presents a VERY narrow window for defensive action compared with the street or even our own homes. The risks, the environment and the potential consequences are significantly different.
Being justified in defending yourself doesn't automatically justify everything you do in response.
The right to defend yourself remains. The permission to use force still depends on the facts.
