The St. John Adapted Exercise Science lab at the University of Calgary is conducting a research study to learn about physical activity behaviours and is recruiting youth (ages 7 to 25) with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDDs).

They want to learn more about what may help or stop a person from being physically active and/or participating in sports activities.

If you'd like to participate or learn more, scan the QR, or email the St. John Adapted Exercise Science lab at [email protected]

Stronger communities are built when everyone has the opportunity to understand, participate and contribute.

Disability is a natural part of human diversity, and disability awareness benefits all of us. When children learn from an early age to understand different abilities, needs and perspectives, they develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom — empathy, adaptability, curiosity, respect and the ability to see situations from another person's perspective.

Our Just Like You program helps build that understanding.

This free, interactive disability awareness program introduces students to disability and diversity in an engaging, age-appropriate way. Led by a facilitator with lived experience of disability, students have the opportunity to ask questions, challenge misconceptions and gain a better understanding of the many different ways people experience and navigate the world.

That understanding has a much broader impact.

When we understand and remove barriers, more people can participate in our schools, workplaces and communities. We benefit from a wider range of perspectives, ideas, skills and talents. We create environments where people are better able to learn from one another, solve problems together and contribute socially and economically.

By helping children understand disability today, Just Like You is helping build a generation that sees diversity not as something to accommodate, but as an important part of strong, vibrant communities.

Just Like You is available free of charge to elementary schools in Edmonton, Calgary and surrounding areas.

To book our presentations, please email [email protected].

Today is International Day of the Girl.

Canada helped establish this day through a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011, recognizing the rights of girls and the barriers that continue to limit their opportunities.

At Calgary Adapted Hub powered by Jumpstart, we know that girls with disabilities can face added barriers to accessing sport, recreation, and physical activity.

Every girl deserves opportunities to move, play, participate, lead, and belong.

When we listen to girls, work alongside families and communities, and intentionally remove barriers, we create more opportunities for girls to participate in ways that are meaningful to them.

Today, and every day, let’s keep building sport and recreation spaces where all girls have the opportunity to thrive.
