You’re slow. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Sure, genetics is the foundation for speed but I’ve coached people to get faster almost every day for my entire career.

Speed is impacted by physical and mechanical. Both of which are trainable. Here’s my top 3 reasons you might be slow…

❌ You’re weak (not necessarily weight room strength)
💧 Your mechanics are inefficient
🏃🏿‍♂️ You don’t actually sprint

Heavy lifting raises your force production ceiling by…

💪🏽 Boosting rate of force development
📈 Increasing motor unit recruitment
🐇 Enhancing muscle and tendon stiffness
⚡️ Improving neural drive for stronger and faster neural signal to the muscles

This is not up for debate. This is about as conclusive of a finding in muscle physiology and performance science as anything and everyone on the planet, athlete or not, would benefit from incorporating regular heavy lifting in to your training routine.

Disagree? @ me and bring the receipts.

🤡 Buffoonery and Shenanigans

The primary training variables of an effective training program are…
📈 Volume
💪🏽 Intensity
📆 Frequency
⚽️ Specificity
🧍🏾‍♀️Individualization
✅ Density
∞ Variance
💤 Rest & Recovery

But don’t forget to have fun. I regularly incorporate buffoonery and shenanigans into my training plans. I’ve found that the warmup is the easiest time to build in these types of things. And it doesn’t have to just be vibes. Done well, a good game or stupid challenge can develop physical skills and capacities; awareness of surroundings and others; tracking, attacking and fleeing concepts and so much more.

Any guesses on what’s going on here?

I’ve worked in high performance sport for over 25 years. I’ve been a part of over 20 championship teams in both individual and team sports. I’ve been everything from an assistant sport coach to a senior department director. In this time, I’ve seen the good and the bad both on the teams I’ve worked and as an external consultant. The championship teams all had one thing in common - mutual respect between departments and a shared objective.

The high performance model fails when there’s misalignment of interests. No department should work in a silo. No expertise should be ignored. Everyone working towards the same goal.

Many athletes and well intentioned coaches think injury means shutting things down. That’s not the case ⛔️.

Doing nothing is never an option.

I’ve actually seen injured athletes, especially those in team sports, come back stronger, faster, and fitter. And that’s because they can fully dedicate themselves to physical training while restricted from team training environments.

But for that to happen you have to begin loading. No time off. Load immediately in whatever way you can.

You wanna jump higher? You gotta have these 3 things:

🦿 High relative strength
🐰 Efficient elasticity
🚀 Optimal technique

Tag someone who needs to hear this 😉

You can’t jump. The reason likely comes down to 3 points.

The best jumpers have:
🦿 High relative strength
🐰 Efficient elasticity
🚀 Optimal technique

Tag a friend who can’t jump 😉

The limiter in youth development is rarely skill…it’s physical capacity and movement competency.

Performance isn’t just about getting fitter—it’s about managing fatigue.
The dual factor (fitness-fatigue) model reminds us that every training session builds fitness and fatigue… and your performance is the balance between the two.

💪🏽Train hard.
🛌 Recover smart.
