Public Notice for the Woronora Marathon on SATURDAY 4 JULY (round 7 of the 2026 Paddle NSW Marathon Series).

The race starts and finishes at the Burnum Burnum Sanctuary. This event brings 100+ boats and supporters to the Woronora area each year. The public is advised of the following impacts:
● The Burnum Burnum Sanctuary, parking area, boat ramp and park shelters are likely to be heavily congested from early on the day.
● Boat owners are encouraged to use the alternate boat ramp at Bonnet Bay noting that this boat ramp will also be within the course set out for the race
● Boat operators are reminded to observe the posted maximum speed restrictions, and minimize boat wash in accordance with
Maritime Safety Act 1998, part 2, section 13 - Reckless, dangerous or negligent navigation and other acts
● Fishing from the shoreline, structures and water is likely to be disrupted by race activities between the Prince Edward Park
footbridge and Thompson’s Bay Illawong.
SSCC and SES volunteers will be assisting with safety boats. Temporary buoys will be deployed during the race to mark the course and shallow water hazards.

Sunday 7 June, SSPC welcomed our park neighbours, the Burnum Burnum Bushcare Group, for a cuppa and chat.
A big thank you to Sabrina Thompson (Sutherland Shire Bushcare) and Linda Brown (SSC Invasive Species Officer) for their insightful presentation on potential biological threats to our river systems. As regular river users, SSPC members are well placed to identify and report priority weeds and other invasive species.
The morning concluded with a tour of the wetlands regeneration site adjacent to the club.

June – July brings us to the D'harawal time of Burrugin when the weather turns cold and frosty and days shorten.
This is the time when the male burrugin (echidna) forms lines of up to 10 as they follow the female through the woodlands in an effort to wear her down and mate with her. It's also when the burringoa (Forest Red Gum) flowers, indicating it's time to collect the nectar of certain plants for ceremonies taking place next season. It's also a warning not to eat shellfish again until the boo'kerrikin blooms (Green Wattle or Early Black Wattle tree (Acacia decurrens)).

SSPC is 54 today, being officially founded 5th May 1972. Back then it cost $3.00 for a family to join! Many things have changed since then but, we're still as passionate as ever about our Club heritage and sport and helping people to get the most out of it recreationally, competitively and socially. Happy Paddling everyone.
