PCYC Hornsbyโs Matin Yazdani returned to competition after almost a year away, stepping into the ring for the 15th time and his first bout in the Elite ranks. The 18-year-old had his older brother and coach Bayan Yaz in his corner.
Across the ring was Crumlin Boxing Clubโs Craig Carroll. The 28-year-old, coached by Phil Sutcliffe, was making his first appearance on Australian soil in his eighth bout.
And their contrasting styles made for an absolute cracker of a welterweight contest.
Carroll brought the classic stick-and-move style, with clever shot selection and some excellent counterpunching.
Yazdani took a very different approach. Hands low, stalking his opponent around the ring, slipping and weaving his way into range before letting the power shots go.
Yazdani swept the opening round on all three cards.
Carroll answered by taking the second on all three.
One round apiece. Everything riding on the third.
And even then, the judges couldnโt agree.
The final round was split, with Yazdani doing just enough to get his hand raised โ one solitary point separating the pair on the final scorecards.
Two completely different approaches. Neither willing to give an inch. And a contest that could have gone either way right until the final bell.
Take a bow, lads. That was quality.
