3 things most runners skip that I never let my athletes skip.
1. Strides, a couple of times a week.
4-6 × 20 seconds, usually tacked onto an easy run once your legs are warm. Relaxed and fast, building towards top speed. You’re getting regular exposure to faster mechanics without adding another hard session.
2. A real warm-up before anything hard.
Not just jogging straight into the session. Add some dynamic movement, drills and a few short accelerations so you’re actually prepared for the intensity you’re about to hit.
3. Eating more when your training increases.
This gets missed constantly. You increase from 40 km to 60 km a week, add a long run or another quality session, but your food intake stays exactly the same. More training creates greater energy and carbohydrate demands. Your fuelling needs to increase with it.
Small things. Skipped constantly because they feel optional.
