In 2021, when Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton recorded their duet of “Does He Love You,” they were continuing a friendship that had already reached a television soundstage sixteen years earlier.
That earlier collaboration took place on April 15, 2005, during the fourth season of The WB sitcom Reba. In the episode “Reba’s Rules of Real Estate,” fictional single mother Reba Hart tries to restart her career and interviews with Dolly Majors, the quick-witted owner of a premier Houston real estate firm. Parton stepped into the role of Majors and hired Hart on screen, delivering a guest appearance that made the broadcast one of the highest-rated episodes of the season.
For McEntire, having Parton on the Los Angeles set meant far more than a ratings boost. While building a second career in network comedy outside the Nashville touring circuit, McEntire was following a blueprint Parton had created in the 1970s and 1980s through her syndicated variety shows and feature films like 9 to 5. Since her early years in country music, McEntire had admired how Parton managed a business empire and crossed into Hollywood while staying connected to her Southern roots. When McEntire asked her to appear on the sitcom, Parton cleared her schedule out of friendship rather than for a television paycheck.
Seeing her longtime role model walk onto the stage to support her brought McEntire to tears behind the scenes. The cast and crew watched Parton arrive with the entire script memorized, remain patient through repeated takes before the live studio audience, and treat the production staff with steady warmth. Both women later became the only female country artists to score number-one hits across four consecutive decades, and that week on a Los Angeles soundstage showed the mutual generosity behind their long careers.
That 2005 sitcom taping was just one part of Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton's decades-long friendship, with more from their history together below.
