From our experience, many small-medium businesses do not have the appropriate Risk and Psychological Safety Management strategies in Place. With new laws, regulators are beginning to pursue more employers for psychological injury in the workplace at an increasing rate.

It is difficult for experienced HR professionals to proactively manage risks, so it if no wonder that employers are falling at first hurdles. Even worse, businesses that do not access HR expertise are at a much higher risk.

For example, In a recent Magistrates Court decision an employer was fined $100,000 plus costs after an employee suffered psychological injury due to overly personal text messages from a colleague and inappropriate comments. Informal meetings and chats to address the behaviour fell short of the required control measures.

From a workers' compensation perspective these claims can also have a big impact on premiums.

Here is some other insights.

Like it or not, we have now entered the AI economy, and everyone needs to catch up. That includes all workers and school curricula. University education needs a major overhaul that business has been urging for decades now. A university education is likely to be irrelevant in 10 years if it is not focused on AI and related jobs.

On one hand, AI advocates compare this evolution to the industrial revolution (jobs shifting to something else) on the other no one will need to work and we will all have a universal income (not sure where that comes from if you are not taxing AI companies?) But lets be clear, when AI and robotics come together the majority of the low income and blue-collar workers will not have alternative jobs in the future. Why employ humans with limited capacity and capability when you can have a robot work 24 hours a day at low additional costs. AI creates a whole new economy that will not just revolutionise but create a major leap from where we are to somewhere truly unknown, especially if they conquer AGI. So, only a few people will be able to participate in the future AI economy.

Leaders also need to step up their game now. We have been advocating a move to true leadership for over 15 years, and we've seen the leadership crisis globally significantly grow every year.

How do you think AI will play out for jobs and business?

I have worked and helped build many start-ups. I agree with much of the early part of this episode says, however, as a HR/People/OD strategist, I have intentionally built fantastic cultures that then scale and maintain as the business grows. It takes a blueprint from the start.

Re co-founders, I can't tell you how many issues occur between co-founders and my advice is always have a very strong chairperson who can anticipate and manage co-founders, especially co-CEO's that are often difficult is required. Don't wait until it starts going sideways.

Being honest and having high-performance systems and strong people systems and leaders is critical to start-ups and medium-size businesses and any business wanting to scale. That's why I developed both the scaling leadership blueprint (https://hrexpertsinternational.com.au/scaling-leadership-blueprint ) and the scaling business blueprint.

Being a business leader is even more difficult as you are so limited in what you can do, but we must all keep trying! Nicola underestimates what an amazing leader she has grown to be.

Mental Health & Addiction issues:-

Regarding her discussion of her co-founder's situation, I have deep compassion. Over the last 30 years, I have supported and tried to help those with significant mental health and addiction problems, and I know how hard it is to get support for them to resolve issues.

How it all ended up is just so sad, but is not just entrepreneurs, it's employees, your colleagues, your clients, your friends and of course family members. Severe mental health issues are unbelievably difficult to get help for.

One thing that fails dramatically is the mental health systems - whether it's psychiatrists, mental health hospitals or other professionals in the area, it is often near impossible to get proper help,at least in the UK and Australia.

As a behavioural specialist, it is even more heart-breaking when you know there is something significantly wrong and the path, but a 15-20 minute consult with a "professional" tends to be unhelpful as they do not spend the time or have a holistic perspective. The system, like most things health-related, needs an overhaul.

I think we'd all be shocked about how many people actually fall into the abyss without help and depart us. It is terribly heartbreaking and so very stressful as someone trying to help, and I have deep compassion for this lady's story, but it is just one of thousands per year!

Let's hope systems improve dramatically for those that need proactive help. Yes, there is free will, and some people are self-destructive are very determined to self-destruct, but we need to have more specialised help early. The aftermath is also very important to process and deal with.

Being kind, having strong awareness, being empathetic, and having true care as a leader, family member, friend or a colleague, we need to remember, no one knows what people are truly going through.

The Leadership Crisis: Why Businesses Struggle with Effective Leadership
Introduction
Leadership is the cornerstone of organizational success, yet many businesses struggle to develop effective leaders. Vanessa Giannos argues that the current leadership crisis stems from outdated practices, lack of strategic focus, and inadequate leadership training. This article explores the reasons behind this crisis and how organizations can overcome it.
The Root Causes of the Leadership Crisis
Vanessa explains that many companies fail to recognize that leadership is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, it requires adaptability, emotional intelligence, and continuous learning. Too often, businesses promote individuals based on technical expertise rather than leadership potential.
Vanessa suggests that companies should focus on identifying high-potential employees early and investing in their leadership development. This proactive approach can help close the leadership gap.
Key Takeaway: Focus on leadership potential. Investing in early development prevents leadership gaps.
How Inadequate Leadership Training Contributes to Business Failures
According to Vanessa, traditional leadership training programs often lack practical application and fail to address the real challenges leaders face. This disconnect leads to ineffective leadership, poor decision-making, and ultimately, business failure.
Vanessa advises integrating hands-on training, coaching, and real-world scenarios into leadership programs. This ensures leaders are better prepared for complex challenges.
Key Takeaway: Use hands-on training. Practical leadership development drives better results.
Building a Leadership Development Pipeline
Vanessa highlights that building a robust leadership pipeline is essential for sustainable growth. Organizations that prioritize leadership development see higher employee engagement, better decision-making, and improved performance.
Vanessa encourages organizations to create mentorship programs and continuous learning opportunities. These initiatives foster a culture of growth and leadership excellence.
Key Takeaway: Develop mentorship programs. Continuous learning enhances leadership capabilities.
Conclusion: Addressing the Leadership Crisis
Vanessa Giannos emphasizes that addressing the leadership crisis requires a shift in mindset and strategy. For those looking to thrive, focusing on leadership development ensures long-term success.
Call to Action: Reflect on your leadership development practices. Invest in training and mentorship to overcome the leadership crisis.
