Wet and windy in the resorts today as a weak cold front crosses the mountains. Fine and mild weather will return tomorrow ahead of another warm front and showers on Saturday.
The next chance of snow is late next week with a stronger system due to drop snow around June 19th.

Another fine day to wrap up the opening weekend of the 2026 snow season and cold nights have allowed the snowmakers to top-up the limited open terrain. A weak cold front will bring showers tomorrow, the rain clearing by Wednesday afternoon ahead of fine weather again on Thursday.

The 2026 New Zealand snow season is just days away from getting started. Pre-season conditions haven’t been ideal, leaving NZ mountains largely bare of snow, apart from what ski fields have been able to manufacture. Mt Hutt is the standout with about 10cm of natural snow on its upper slopes.

As for when we can we expect some snow to kickstart the NZ season, the The Grasshopper has the details in his first NZ forecast for the 2026 winter:

The 2026 snow season kicks off tomorrow and the resorts have turned for green to white after 20-30cms of snow fell above 1700m mid-week. The snowmakers have also added to the cover and so there will be some skiing and snowboarding this weekend with limited beginner terrain open in Buller, Hotham, Perisher and Thredbo.

A cold front is heading for the mountains with snowfalls expected tonight with 20+cms falling above 1700 metres. Snow levels will drop down to 1400m early tomorrow morning before rising again to 1600m later in the day. The storm should clear on Friday for a fine opening weekend for the 2026 season.

The Grasshopper is back with his first detailed Australian forecast for the 2026 season and he's happy to be kicking off with a good one:

"This cut-off low-pressure system is due to hit Monday afternoon and deliver a load of snow just in time for Opening Weekend.

Initial snowfall from this storm may not stick as temperatures will quickly rise and we’ll cop a load of rain on Tuesday. However, cooler temps from Wednesday should see up to 45-55cm accumulate on the upper slopes and 10-20cm on the lower slopes by the time the storm clears late Friday."

A week until the “official” start of the 2026 season and after a long run of mild weather a change is on the way. A cold front will bring showers tomorrow ahead of colder temps and light snowfalls late in the weekend. All eyes are on a second system due mid-week which has the potential to deliver snow ahead of the 2026 season opening on June 6th. #
