Tiger 🐅 or Marble 🏛️? Know Your Deep-Water Flathead! 🎣🌊
Flathead are a staple across southern waters, but when you venture into deeper offshore sand tracks, two distinct species dominate the catch: the Tiger Flathead and the Marble (Marbled) Flathead.
Both hunt along sandy ocean floors waiting for bait to pass over, but telling them apart—and knowing their table qualities—comes down to a few key traits:
🐅 The Tiger Flathead:
The Identifiers: Named for its ferocity and distinct set of sharp, canine-like teeth. They feature orange-brown spotting and a sleeker profile adapted for aggressive ambushes in deep sandy channels.
On the Plate: Lean, firm, and flaky white meat—an absolute classic for traditional beer-battered fish and chips.
🏛️ The Marble Flathead:
The Identifiers: Easily recognized by its darker, intricate marbled bands across the back that blend right into mixed sand and reef bottoms.
On the Plate: Distinctly sweeter, delicate flesh that holds moisture exceptionally well when pan-seared in garlic butter.
The Rule: Remember to check your local fisheries regulations before putting them in the keeper bag—minimum legal size is 33 cm. 📏
