Koichiro Okuma Shihan’s visit to QLD JKA SKC Ipswich didn’t disappoint. Always something new to learn—different ways to apply techniques and approach training. Strong, authentic JKA Karate as always. Grateful and thankful to Keith Geyer Shihan and Jim Dodrill Sensei for having myself and my students attend

“Shochū geiko”暑中稽古 literally means “training during the hottest part of summer.” In Japanese martial arts (and sometimes other traditional disciplines), it refers to special practice sessions deliberately held in intense heat and humidity. The goal isn’t just physical conditioning, but cultivating mental toughness, perseverance, discipline, and spirit by continuing training under harsh conditions.

We’ve had the incredible privilege of demonstrating the art of budo karate at local Japan Sunshine Coast Festival for the last couple of years, where cultures from all around the community come together to celebrate diversity and unity. At these festival, we’ve seen firsthand the power of community to bridge cultures and promote mutual understanding.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to be part of this year festival held at KWSC this coming Sunday 17th August such a vibrant, multicultural community, and we look forward to continuing to promote the essence and spirit of budo—both in and out of the dojo

Dojo Zokin 道場雑巾- The term specifically refers to the cleaning of the dojo floor, often using a damp cloth. One of the traditional practices from ancient Japan is that of cleaning the dōjō. Not just cleaning for the sake of being clean, but a practice in which you are also cleansing your heart, feelings, and body through the act of cleaning and a simple way for warm up and exercise before training. Soji demonstrates respect for the dojo, instructors, and fellow students.
Participating in soji, regardless of rank or seniority, helps cultivate humility. The act of cleaning can be a meditative practice, promoting focus and awareness. It fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility
