Biliir is the Gamilaroi term for the Black Cockatoo. In this artwork, the dotted pattern represents rain, while Biliirโs feather below symbolizes his connection to it. The vibrant yellow in the center signifies the land. Additionally, the piece incorporates the colors of the Aboriginal Flag.
Black Cockatoos are known to migrate from the mountains to the coast when rain approaches. Their preferred plants, such as Casuarina, prepare to release seeds, and the bark of Banksia trees they enjoy chewing becomes soft. According to ancient stories, the sighting of Biliir, the Black Cockatoo, signals that rain is on the way.
