Last night, we were fortunate to have Peta Slocombe and Dr Ashley McGrath lead our latest Women of Sport – Inspiring Women session, focused on motivating people and navigating tough conversations. Together, they created a space that challenged how we think about leadership.

Peta’s message was grounded and direct. Leading well is not about having all the answers. It is about how you show up, how you understand yourself, and how you respond when things feel uncomfortable. Motivating others starts with recognising individual strengths, building trust and being clear in your intent. Tough conversations are not something to avoid, but something to approach with care, clarity and respect.

A clear theme throughout the session was that growth does not come from staying comfortable. It comes from stepping forward, even when you feel uncertain, and learning to back your own capability. Just as important is the reminder that the relationship you have with yourself shapes how you lead others.

Thank you to Peta Slocombe for sharing her experience so openly and practically, and to Dr Ashley McGrath for guiding the conversation.

We also acknowledge the ongoing support of the WA Government and Lotterywest in making the SportWest Women of Sport Program possible.

These are the kinds of conversations that stay with you and shape how the next generation of leaders approaches their work in sport.

Every story has a beginning. Every journey leaves a mark.

Today, we proudly share our First Nations artwork, created to reflect SportWest’s commitment to connection, community and reconciliation.

Artwork is a powerful way of sharing story, connection and meaning. This piece reflects learning, connection to Country and the shared journey of sport in creating inclusive environments.

It speaks to the role sport plays in bringing people together. To the relationships we build, the understanding we grow, and the path we walk together as we continue our reconciliation journey.

We are honoured to have this artwork as a visual representation of our commitment, and grateful to Jacinta Anderson for bringing this story to life.

Sport has the power to bring people together.

Today, SportWest is proud to launch our Reconciliation Action Plan, marking an important step in our commitment to building a more inclusive, respectful and equitable sporting community across Western Australia.

This is more than a plan. It is a commitment to listen, learn and walk alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. A commitment to strengthen relationships, deepen respect, and create meaningful opportunities across our sector.

Together, we can shape a stronger and more connected future for sport.

Sport connects us all, from all cultures and backgrounds to gather on all lands across this great state to play, support, and unite in the sports we love.

Today and every day, we acknowledge the First Nation’s people of this land as the oldest continuing culture in the world.

Driving on regional and remote roads comes with unique challenges.

From long distances to fatigue, changing conditions and higher speeds, it is important to stay alert and give yourself the time you need to get there safely.

Best on Road Ambassador Jeremy McGovern shares a simple reminder. Slow down, plan ahead and stay switched on.

Because on country roads, every safe decision matters.

SportWest extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Alan Morton, who sadly passed away last week.

Alan made a valued contribution to sport, leaving a legacy that will be remembered by those who had the privilege to know and work alongside him. His passion and commitment helped shape the sporting community, and his impact will not be forgotten.

The Morton family has given so much to sport in Western Australia, and SportWest acknowledges this contribution with deep gratitude. We extend our sincere condolences to former SportWest Board member Nicole Horrocks and her family, and are thinking of them during this difficult time.
