The Fremantle Rebels Softball Club is saddened to acknowledge the passing of Von Hughes.

A much-loved Life Member, and a true matriarch of our club in the formative years. Awarded Life Membership in 1999, Von dedicated countless hours to the Rebels family, most notably through her tireless work running the canteen alongside long time friend Edna Hitchcock.

For generations of players, coaches, officials and supporters, the canteen was an important gathering place at the club, and Von was a constant presence at the centre of it all.

Known for her firm but fair nature, Von commanded respect while always caring deeply for those around her. She helped shape the culture and values of our club, ensuring standards were upheld while making everyone feel part of the Rebels family.

Von's contribution to Fremantle Rebels Softball Club will never be forgotten.

We extend our sincere condolences to Carol, Gary, Noel & Leon and their extended family and friends and thank her for the lasting legacy Von leaves behind.

Background
Each year, Geraldton Softball Association (GSA) holds a female Carnival welcoming players of all skill levels and experience. The Geraldton Women’s Softball Association (GWSA) hosted the first June Carnival in 1975 following the GWSA’s lead in hosting the first State Championships in 1974. The Championships is named to commemorate the month of the year it is played.

Purpose
The purpose of this year’s 50th June Carnival is to celebrate softball, the Geraldton Softball Association, and the history of this milestone event while maximising profits as GSA’s major annual fundraiser. Our focus is on generating strong financial returns to support the association’s future, while still delivering a well-run tournament that maintains a positive experience for players and supporters.

Point of Interest
The June Carnival is one of the biggest weekends on the Australian softball and Geraldton calendar. The Carnival attracts hundreds of softball players for three days of non-stop action. Over 190 Games are played across the diamonds of the Utakarra Ballpark as well as Towns Oval. The carnival features teams competing across six divisions and playing round-robin games, with the top two going straight through to the final. A tiebreaker rule was introduced in 2023 allowing a runner to start on second at the start of each inning. This was introduced to provide more chances to score but also chances for quick outs and double plays.

Today
The June Carnival showcases top athletes with outstanding skills who travel from all over WA. Games will be played at the following venues:
• GSA Utakarra Ball Park - Eastward Rd Before Abraham St, Utakarra WA 6530
• Brigades Football Oval - Eadon Clark Precinct, North West Coastal Highway, Geraldton WA 6530
