When people think of good trim, they often picture experienced divers hovering effortlessly in a perfectly horizontal position. It certainly looks impressive, but that's not why trim matters. Good trim is one of the most important skills a diver can develop because it affects almost everything you do underwater.

Trim simply refers to your body position in the water. Ideally, your body should be as horizontal and streamlined as possible. This allows you to move efficiently through the water while maintaining better balance and control.

The result isn't just a diver who looks more experienced. It's a diver who uses less energy, consumes less air, and enjoys every dive more.

๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐›๐จ๐๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฆ๐š๐ค๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐œ๐ก ๐š ๐๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž?

A streamlined position reduces drag as you swim. Instead of wasting energy pushing water with your body or kicking upwards and downwards, nearly all of your effort moves you forwards.

That means every fin kick becomes more efficient.

Good trim also makes buoyancy much easier to control. When your body is balanced, small changes in your breathing or BCD have predictable effects. Divers with poor trim often find themselves constantly adjusting their buoyancy because their body position is working against them.

The result is unnecessary movement, increased air consumption, and a dive that feels far more difficult than it needs to.

It's better for the underwater environment too

Good trim doesn't just benefit the diver. It protects the environment.
Divers whose fins hang low often stir up sand and silt from the seabed, reducing visibility for everyone behind them. In more delicate environments, poorly controlled fin kicks can easily damage coral, sponges, and other marine life that may have taken decades to grow.

Maintaining good trim allows you to glide through the water without disturbing the environment around you.

As your trim improves, so does your overall control. Hovering becomes easier. Navigation feels more natural. You can check your gauges, communicate with your buddy, or take photographs without constantly fighting your position in the water.
This becomes especially important in stronger currents, low visibility, wrecks, or any environment where precise buoyancy and body control are essential.

Good trim is about far more than looking like an experienced diver. It reduces effort, improves buoyancy control, lowers air consumption, protects the underwater environment, and gives you greater confidence throughout every dive. The relaxed, effortless appearance of experienced divers isn't the goal. It's simply the result of mastering one of diving's most valuable skills.

For this weekโ€™s Scuba Obsession social club dive on Sunday the 13th of September, we are heading to Woodman Point Fishing Spot with Instructor Lisa picking up the BBQ tongs ๐ŸŒญ๐ŸŒญ๐ŸŒญ

Arrive: 8am
Site Brief: 8.30am
Entry into water at 8.45am

You will be able to hire tanks and equipment from Scuba Obsession, we will even bring it to site for you, ready to go with the added bonus you donโ€™t need to wash your equipment at the end, we will do it for you!
