If you're setting up a new Ford Ranger for Australian outback touring, the Maxliner Venture Gen 2 canopy is one of the better value touring canopies on the market. It's designed specifically for the 2022+ Ranger and combines an internal steel frame with OEM-style fit and central locking.
Maxliner Venture Canopy:
# # How it suits an outback touring build
The Venture is aimed at 4WD touring rather than just trades:
* 150 kg dynamic roof load — enough for most rooftop tents and roof platforms while driving.
* 350 kg static roof load — suitable for sleeping in a rooftop tent when parked.
* Steel-reinforced internal frame as standard (no extra roof support required).
* Central locking with push-button lift-up side windows.
* No-drill installation, which is a plus on a new vehicle.
# # Why it's a good touring choice
Excellent gear access
Both side windows lift high on gas struts, making it easy to reach fridges, drawers, and recovery gear without climbing into the tub.
Ventilation
The front opening window helps airflow into the tub and makes cleaning the rear cab window much easier.
Roof carrying
Ideal for a lightweight rooftop tent, awning, solar panel, or recovery boards. Stay within your Ranger's overall roof and GVM limits.
Weather protection
Well-sealed ABS canopy keeps dust and rain out far better than most soft covers, which matters on corrugated outback roads.

# # Any downsides?
Yes—mostly the same trade-offs as any glass touring canopy:
* Glass side windows are heavier than square box alloy canopies.
* The glossy finish looks great but will show pinstripes from scrub.
* For very hard expedition use with constant heavy roof loads, premium alloy tray canopies (Norweld, RSI SmartCap, etc.) are tougher, but they also cost substantially more.
# # My recommendation
For a Wildtrak, Sport, XLT or Tremor Ranger doing trips like the Gibb River Road, Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track and Cape York, the Maxliner Venture Gen 2 is a strong choice. It offers an excellent balance of price, integrated styling, security, and genuine roof-load capability for touring.
