Starting this week, we'll be sharing anonymised insights from carbon bicycle inspections conducted in , highlighting the type, location, and severity of damage identified through ultrasonic testing.

Our goal isn't to create alarm — it's to improve understanding of where damage occurs, what it looks like, and how riders, mechanics, and buyers can make more informed decisions.

Every inspection adds to our understanding of carbon fibre integrity in the real world.

Follow along as we build a clearer picture of bicycle structural safety, one inspection at a time.

Question: would you buy a used car without a pte-purchase inspection?

Carbon fibre bicycles represent a significant investment for many riders, with premium bikes often costing thousands of dollars.

Structural inspection can provide valuable information in a range of situations, including:
- Following crashes, impacts or transport damage
- Prior to purchasing a second-hand bicycle
- Before selling a high-value carbon bike
- As part of annual preventative maintenance
- Supporting insurance claims and assessments

Maybe the question should be 'why wouldn't I book an inspection?'

Unlike visual inspections or tap testing, ultrasonic testing (UT) can detect subsurface defects such as delamination, impact damage and internal cracking while providing documented, measurable results.

For bike shops, that's not just about finding damage—it's about demonstrating that a recognised, professional inspection process was followed.

Whether dealing with warranty claims, pre-owned bike sales or customer safety concerns, UT provides objective evidence that helps protect riders and reduce liability.

Better data. Better decisions. Greater protection for everyone involved.

Unlike aluminium or steel, carbon fibre is difficult and costly to recycle. Many damaged frames ultimately end up in landfill, despite significant energy and resources being invested in their manufacture.

That's why an important question should be asked before every warranty claim:

🔴 Is the bike actually damaged beyond repair?

Too often, uncertainty leads to replacement when inspection and repair may have been possible. This phenomena is known also as 'premature obsolescence'

Every unnecessary frame replacement means more manufacturing, more transport, more waste, and another carbon frame entering the disposal stream.

🟢 Better inspection leads to better decisions.

For riders, manufacturers, and the environment, understanding the true condition of a carbon bike before replacing it is becoming increasingly important.

When should you inspect a carbon bike?

Start with the simplest rule:

👉 If you see, hear, or feel something that doesn’t seem right.

That could mean:
• A strange creak or new noise
• A visible mark after an impact
• A change in ride feel or stiffness
• A crash, drop, or transport incident
• Buying or selling a pre-owned bike

Carbon damage isn’t always visible — and some of the most serious issues can exist beneath the surface.

When in doubt, inspect.

Carbon fibre structures are layered internally.

Damage often develops BETWEEN those layers.

Ultrasonic NDT measures what’s happening beneath the surface — identifying defects invisible externally.
That’s the difference between 'appearance' and structural integrity.

One of the most common things riders say before hidden damage is found.

Carbon fibre doesn’t always fail at impact.

Sometimes internal damage develops quietly until the next hard sprint, pothole, or descent.

Ultrasonic NDT detects internal changes that visual checks can’t see.

That’s why post-crash inspection matters — even after “minor” incidents.

Visual inspection is still your first line of defence.

Before any tools, before any tech — a careful, methodical visual check is where every good assessment starts.

But here’s the key: it has to be done properly.
Not a quick once-over.

Not just looking for obvious cracks.

Done well, visual inspection can catch a lot.

Done poorly, it creates a false sense of confidence.
And with carbon, that’s where the risk lies.

Because while visual inspection is essential — it can’t see everything.

That’s why the standard is evolving.
