A top summer city skate route. Nobbies to Newcastle Beach, through the park, down to the mall, under the shady awnings of Hunter Street. Return where the tram veers on the other side and all the way up to Fort Scratchley hilltop. Catch your breath then enjoy the flowy hill back down to Nobbies. More detail in comments.

🛼 Cockle Creek Skateway 🛼
What happens when you head along the pathways north of Speers Point Park? Head under the bridge and keep going. You'll find awesome path skating for 5 or so kms all the way to Glendale TAFE.

The path is flat until the roundabout near Bunnings then it dips up and down so you'll need to be able to control your speed and be able to stop. However, apart from one small road crossing, most of the dips are safe to take fast as it's clear ahead where you start to roll up hill again. None of the hills are mega strenuous.
Past the bakery you turn off Lake road to roll on the flat again on a beautiful path beside the golf course. Keep going and you hit the main road opposite red rooster. Across and up the hill brings you into the TAFE, and one end of the Tramway Track. There's another post about that but it's essentially one big hill through the bush between Glendale and Wallsend. A great adventure skate.

Newcastle harbour is one of the best Skateways. The paths are mostly flat and smooth from the fish co-op near Carrington bridge all the way round to Newcastle beach. You can even skate to the bottom of Nobbies Lighthouse.

Really impressed with this app: Relive. I tracked this skate earlier in the year with Runkeeper but was able to import the data and make this cool fly through. Skating in town is a blast!

Have you ever been to the Velodrome? The path around the outside is wide smooth and flat, perfect for leisurely laps or speedy splits. The Velodrome itself is an interesting challenge with steep banks and a narrow flat path. It's showing its age in places but there's definitely something there for those wanting a challenge or missing the skatepark. Located in Adamstown near the Broadmeadow Racecourse and Merewether High.

If you're confident skating on the road, give this circuit a go. Starting near the Tighes Hill Cellars car park it's just over 7km and includes an easy bridge bomb where Hunter St and Maitland Rd morph. Do not attept the pebble path along the waterway opposite Carrington. It is UNSKATEABLE! Take the Hannel Street bike lane (the eastern side/south bound) or residential streets between. Path near fish co-op is better. Definately proceed with care at the roundabout near Carrington bridge where the risk of being hit by a car should not be underestimated.

Stockton Skate.
Paths run from the bridge to the breakwater. Wide, smooth and flat the main obstacles are other people and their dogs. Avoid when windy.
If you're coming from town you'll find the ferry operators fairly relaxed about wearing skates aboard (so long as you're respectful and take controlled steps).
For thrill seekers there is an awesome little skatepark next to the wharf with a big street section and a half pipe with pool coping. Beware of sand.
If you're keen for a feed in the village, the fish and chips are good but the road surface is a bit rough.
