🐴 Important Update: Rescheduling our Rally for Horse Welfare

Hi everyone,
The safety and well-being of our horses and riders is always our top priority. After reviewing the forecast and consulting the Pony Club Australia Hot Weather Policy, the CMR&PC Committee have made the decision to reschedule our upcoming rally on Saturday 7th March.

While the air temperature alone is one factor, the PCA policy uses the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT)—which accounts for humidity, wind speed, and sun exposure—to determine when it is no longer safe for our horses and riders to exert themselves.

The safety and welfare of our horses, as well as our riders, coaches, and volunteers, is always our first priority. According to the PCA guidelines, the projected conditions fall into the High-risk category, where strenuous exercise is strongly discouraged.

We are disappointed to miss out on seeing everyone, but we know you’ll agree that our four-legged friends' health comes first.

New Date: Sunday 22nd March

Stay cool, keep your horses hydrated, and we will see you at the next one!

Why temperature alone is misleading. One of the most common misunderstandings in hot weather management is relying on the forecast temperature alone.

🐎WELFARE WEDNESDAY
Bringing a horse Back from a Spell 🐴
Has your horse had more than four weeks off? If so, they’ll need a tailored program to safely return to work. Here’s how to help your horse transition smoothly:
✨ Plan Ahead: Avoid sudden feed changes. Adjustments should be made gradually over two weeks, focusing on roughage with minimal concentrate until workload increases.
✨ Saddle Fit: After time off, your horse may have lost muscle. Ensure your saddle still fits properly, using padding if necessary. Monitor and adjust it as your horse progresses.
✨ Environment Matters: Horses in large, hilly paddocks may retain more fitness than those kept in small, flat areas. Tailor your plan accordingly—horses that maintained higher activity levels might need a slightly less gradual return.
✨ Returning from Injury: If your horse was spelled due to injury, always follow your vet’s advice on their rehabilitation program.
✨ Holiday Break: For horses that have simply been on a break, here’s a general guide to get them back in shape:
Week 1-2: Focus on walking—starting with 10-20 minutes in hand, then under saddle. Gradually increase to 30-45 minutes, introducing short trot sessions. Stick to straight lines and gentle curves.
Week 3-4: Increase trot work to about 50% of the session and begin cantering on straight lines and gentle curves. Overweight horses may need more time before introducing canter work.
Week 5-6: If all is going well, you can begin reintroducing jumping, starting with small sessions once or twice a week.
Checklist: How’s Your Horse Adapting?
🐴 Condition: Is your horse maintaining their weight, or do they need more feed?
💪 Muscle Development: Are muscles developing in the right areas—across the rump, back, and neck?
😓 Fatigue: Is your horse sweating heavily or becoming winded quickly? You may need to ease the workload.
🥕 Appetite & Hydration: Are they eating and drinking well, and content in their environment? Any signs of stress or lack of appetite may require veterinary support, especially for digestive concerns.
Bringing your horse back to work safely ensures they stay happy and healthy!
