🔥 Campfire Night at Joey Scouts! 🔥

Our Joeys put their fire safety learning into action — collecting sticks, building and lighting a fire, and of course cooking s’mores! 🍫🔥

Over the last two weeks they’ve completed these I-statements:

🔥 I can strike a match.

🪵 I can collect sticks for preparing a campfire.

🔥 I can be safe around a campfire.

🛑 I can demonstrate Stop, Drop and Roll.

🍫 I can cook a snack on a fire.

🏕️ I can demonstrate the correct way to build a safe fireplace in the bush.

🧯 I understand the basic dangers of fire and how to be safe around them.

🔺 I know the basic elements needed to make a fire.

A great couple of weeks of learning by doing — finished perfectly with s’mores around the fire! 🔥⚜️

This Monday we are meeting at the Noonameena scout camp located between Merimbula and Pambula.

Last night was one of our favourite Joey nights — fire safety!

We practised STOP, DROP & ROLL, learnt “Get down low and GO, GO, GO!”, and then tackled an important life skill: learning how to safely light a match. 🔥

Some of our Joeys had never struck a match before, while others had done it plenty of times. Either way, we love watching their confidence grow as they practise an old skill or realise, “I can do this!” 💚
We put those new skills into action with our tea-light relays, mixed in with plenty of games and laughter.

A huge thank you to all our Adult Helpers and Leaders who jumped in — fire safety night really is an all-hands-on-deck activity. Having lots of supportive adults means every Joey gets the time and supervision they need to learn safely and confidently.

Now we've learnt about fire safety and how to safely light a flame...

🔥 We're ready for next week's campfire night! 🏕️

⚜️ The last fortnight at 1st Merimbula Scouts! ⚜️

Week 3 was a special one as some of our newer youth members took an exciting step in their Scouting journey with their investiture ceremony. They received their Scout scarf and woggle, officially becoming members of the Scout family and beginning their adventure! 🧣

Afterwards, we looked to the skies and explored the night sky through a range of fun constellation activities. ⭐

This past week, Week 4, we took things even further and dove deeper into our Southern Hemisphere night sky. The youth learned how to observe the stars and use them to help with navigation—an awesome skill for any budding adventurer!🧭

To finish the night, we put their survival skills and decision-making to the test with a survival scenario game. Stranded with no food, no water, no shelter and no way to attract attention, each team had to decide: which four items would you choose to give yourself the best chance of survival? 🏕️🤔

There were some creative—and sometimes very unexpected—choices!

If this sounds like something your children would enjoy, come join the adventure! 🌿🔥⭐

Another action-packed week at Scouts!

We invested some new members and gave out lots of badges to start the night for all sections. Then we got straight into Activites.

Our Joeys became First Aid Responders, learning skills that could one day make a very big difference! 🚑

They practised DRSABC, learnt how to place someone safely into the recovery position, and discovered why the buddy system is so important, with one of our Scouts stepping up to explain and demonstrate.

They also learnt a surprisingly important skill — how to call 000 from a locked mobile phone. 📱🚨 Many Joeys don’t have their own phone or know Mum or Dad’s passcode, so knowing how to make an emergency call without unlocking the phone is a fantastic skill to have.

Meanwhile, our Cubs had their eyes on the sky! 🌙✨ They explored the phases of the Moon and constellations, preparing for next week’s challenge when they’ll learn to navigate by the stars! ⭐🧭

First aid, teamwork, astronomy and navigation — learning practical skills through adventure is what Scouting is all about! ⚜️🏕️

🗒️ quick note about the “D” in DRSABCD: it wasn’t forgotten — it was deliberately left for another session.

This activity was designed around a casualty who was unresponsive but breathing normally, which is why the Joeys focused on checking breathing, getting help and learning the recovery position.

We believe Joeys should know what a defibrillator is, what it looks like, recognise the sign for a defibrillator, where they are commonly located and that, if asked by an adult, they can help by going to get one.

Several of our leaders are health professionals with current clinical experience in advanced life support, so the content and scope of this session were chosen intentionally to be safe, age-appropriate and focused on the learning outcome for the night.

There will be plenty more first aid to come! 🚑
