🏹 Coach's Corner – Mental Mastery

The Mind Is Part of Your Equipment

Archery is a physical sport.

But anyone who has spent time on the shooting line knows that what happens between your ears matters just as much as what happens with your bow. In fact it matters more......

You can have the perfect equipment.

You can have technically sound form.

You can have practised thousands of arrows.

And then...

You step onto the line, the pressure builds, and suddenly everything feels different.

That is where mental mastery comes in.

Mental mastery isn't about never feeling nervous, anxious, upset or disappointed.

It's about learning how to manage those feelings and still shoot the shot you know how to shoot.

🎯 What can we work on?

Focus
Stay in the present rather than worrying about the last arrow or the next one. We only ever shoot one arrow. One arrow, one arrow, one arrow.

Confidence
Trust the work you've put in and your ability to execute your shot. Trust the process

Breathing
Use your breathing to help settle your body and your mind. Deep breathes.

Routine
Develop a consistent pre-shot routine that gives you something familiar to return to. Do the same thing every time and get the same result.

Resilience
A bad arrow doesn't have to become a bad end—or a bad competition. Everyone does a bad arrow from time to time. It is the next arrow which is important. Can you recover and do a great arrow next?

Process
Focus on executing your shot rather than becoming obsessed with the score.

And remember our last Coach's Corner...

Don't chase the arrow. Trust your process.

Your mental game is part of that process.

The goal isn't to eliminate every negative thought or nervous feeling.

The goal is to learn how to recognise it, reset, and get back to your shot.

🏹 Coach's Challenge

Next time you shoot, pay attention to what happens before each arrow.

What are you thinking?

How are you breathing?

Are you focused on your process—or already thinking about the score?

You will discover that improving your mental game starts with simply becoming more aware of it and significantly improves your results. Most events are won and lost in your head. Make your brain your superpower.

At Arrows Plus, Get Better Archery isn't just about shooting more arrows.

It's about becoming a better archer—physically, technically and mentally.

“The shot isn't finished when the arrow leaves the bow.”

That gives us a strong coaching point without getting too technical, and it follows nicely from Series 04's emphasis on having a repeatable process.

🏹 Coach's Corner – Series 05

The Shot Isn't Finished When the Arrow Leaves the Bow

The arrow has gone.

So the shot is finished… right?

Not quite.

Your follow-through is an important part of the shot process and can tell us a lot about what happened during the shot.

A good follow-through isn't something you suddenly add after the release.

It is the continuation of a good shot.

When you release the string, try not to immediately collapse, drop your bow or move your head to watch where the arrow is going.

Instead:

🏹 Keep your bow arm stable

🏹 Keep your head and body position

🏹 Allow the string hand to move naturally

🏹 Stay focused on your aim

🏹 Hold your position until you hear the arrow hit the target

The follow-through should feel natural, not forced.

And here's something important:

Don't try to "make" your follow-through look right.

If you have to dramatically hold yourself in position after every shot, there may be something earlier in your process that needs attention.

Your follow-through is the result of everything that came before it.

Good preparation → good ex*****on → natural follow-through.

And if your follow-through suddenly changes?

That's useful information for you—or your coach.

🎯 Watch what happens after the release. It might tell you more than you think.

🏹 Coach's Challenge

For your next practice session, don't immediately look at where your arrow has gone.

After each shot, ask yourself:

Did I stay in my process?

Did I maintain my position?

Did my follow-through feel natural?

You might learn something before you even walk down to the target.

At Arrows Plus, we can help you understand what your shot is telling you and work with you to develop a consistent, repeatable process.

That's what Get Better Archery is all about.

🏹 Coach's Corner – Series 04

Don't Just Shoot an Arrow. Shoot the Process.

It's easy to watch what other archers do and try to copy them.

And sometimes that works...

Until it doesn't...

Your shots aren't working the way they normally do. Your groups start to wander. Something just doesn't feel right.

Ask any good coach in any sport what they will tell an athlete at that point:

"Go back to your process."

But what happens if you don't have a process?

You have nothing to go back to.

Your shot process is your roadmap. It gives you something familiar and repeatable to work through when things aren't going according to plan.

Your process will change and be refined as you develop as an archer. That's part of getting better.

But it's important to build a solid shot process from the start.

It doesn't need to be complicated.

It might be as simple as:

🏹 Nock the arrow
🏹 Set up for your shot
🏹 Come up
🏹 Draw
🏹 Hold
🏹 Aim
🏹 Release
🏹 Follow through

Or it might be shorter and more concise—or contain a little more detail.

The important thing is that it works for you.

And remember...

Your process can't be too long.

You don't want to be thinking about twenty different things while you're trying to shoot a good shot.

Your process should be simple enough to remember, repeat and trust.

When things are going well, your process helps you stay consistent.

When things aren't going well, your process gives you something to come back to.

🎯 Don't chase the arrow. Trust your process.

At Arrows Plus, we can help you build your own unique shot process—one that suits you, your shooting and your goals.

That's what Get Better Archery is all about.

🏹 Coach's Corner – Series 03

Practice Doesn't Make Perfect...
Perfect Practice Makes Perfect.

We've all heard the saying:
"Practice makes perfect."

But in archery, that's only half the story.

If you practice poor technique over and over again, you're not improving...
You're simply becoming better at repeating mistakes.

The real goal is purposeful, quality practice.
Every arrow you shoot should have a purpose.
Ask yourself:
🎯 What am I trying to improve today?
🎯 What am I focusing on?

Remember to share your purpose with someone else. It could be your coach, your friend, your training partner, your mum..... A goal or purpose shared is more likely to be achieved.

Sometimes you'll shoot fewer arrows during a practice session—but learn much more.

Remember...
Quality beats quantity.
The best archers don't just practice more.
They practice better.
There is a place for quantity too of course and you need some quantity to be shot fit, but like we always say, you can do lots of arrows badly or the right number of arrows done well.

At Arrows Plus, we encourage archers to train with purpose. Set a goal for each session, focus on one or two key skills, and give yourself time to improve.

That's how confidence grows.
That's how consistency develops.
That's how better archers are made.

🏹 Practice doesn't make perfect.
🎯 Perfect practice makes perfect.
________________________________________
🎯 Coach's Challenge
Before your next practice session, choose one or two aspects of your shot or your mental resilience to work on.
Don't worry about your score.
Focus on improving one or two things well.
You might be surprised how much progress you make.

🏹 Coach's Corner – Series 02

Warm Up. Shoot Well. Recover Better.

You hear it in almost every sport…

"Don't forget your warm-up."

Yet in archery—perhaps because it doesn't look as physically demanding as some other sports—it can be one of the first things archers skip.

The truth is, a proper warm-up and warm-down are an important part of every training session.

They help with:
🎯 Injury prevention
🎯 Better shooting performance
🎯 Improved flexibility and mobility
🎯 General health and wellbeing

Before You Shoot…

We recommend dynamic stretching.

Dynamic stretches involve active, controlled movements that:

✔ Increase your heart rate
✔ Loosen muscles and joints
✔ Prepare several muscle groups at once
✔ Get your body ready to shoot

Resistance bands are one of our favourite training tools for warming up (and techniques, and, and, and). They're simple, effective, and help activate the muscles used throughout the shot.

After You Shoot…

Take a few minutes to cool down with static stretching.

Static stretches are slower and gentler. Each stretch is held for around 30 seconds to:

✔ Reduce muscle tightness
✔ Improve flexibility
✔ Help your body recover
✔ Gradually lower your heart rate

Every Archer Is Different

As your archery journey continues, you'll discover which warm-up routine works best for your body.

The important thing is to make it part of your regular shooting routine.

A few minutes of preparation before and after shooting can make a big difference—not only to your performance today, but to your enjoyment of archery for years to come.

This is just one of the many coaching topics we explore in our Get Better Archery program.

🏹 Better preparation. Better performance. Better archery.

🏹 Coach's Corner
Balance = Precision
Did you know that one of the keys to consistent shooting isn't your bow...
It's your balance.
To shoot consistently, you need to be able to control your body and stay as steady as possible throughout the shot.
For many people, body awareness doesn't come naturally—and that's perfectly okay.
The good news?
Like every other part of archery, balance and body awareness can be developed.
At Arrows Plus we use a range of fun and effective coaching drills to help archers better understand how their body moves and how to improve control.
Have you ever...
🧱 Shot while standing on bricks?
📚 Tried shooting with a book balanced on your head?
⚖️ Practised from a balance board?
These are just a few of the coaching drills we use to improve stability, posture, and precision.
And remember...
Balance looks different for everyone.
Not everyone can stand to shoot—and that's okay too. We work with the body you have and help you become the best archer you can be.
Our goal is to help every archer improve, whatever their starting point.
This is just one of the many topics we explore in our new Get Better Archery program.
🎯 Better balance. Better control. Better shooting.
