Dance style spotlight: Acro

Acro started as gymnastics moves borrowed into dance, and it’s stuck around because it does something other styles don’t. It teaches kids to trust their own body.

Handstands. Cartwheels. Controlled falls. Every skill builds strength, flexibility and the kind of body awareness that shows up everywhere else in a kid’s life, not only on the dance floor.

Right now we run acro for kids only. When we open at Ferny Creek, we’d love to bring in an adult class too if there’s enough people keen. If that’s you, comment or send us a message. We’re building the timetable around what people are asking for.

This space, the Ferny Creek General Store, sat empty too long, we’re bringing it back to life.

Ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, lyrical, Latin and ballroom, fitness. All ages, all under one roof. Classes stay small on purpose.

This building used to be the heart of the community. We’re about to make that true again.

Can’t wait to show you.

Hip hop was never one style. It’s breaking, popping, locking, house, krumping, all born in different pockets of the same struggle, all built by kids with no studio, no funding, and every reason to make noise anyway. In 2024 breaking made it all the way to the Olympic stage in Paris. Fifty years from a housing complex rec room to the world’s biggest sporting event.

It started in a bombed-out borough because a bunch of kids refused to disappear. DJ Kool Herc threw a party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx on 11 August 1973 and accidentally invented a genre. He looped the “break,” the ten seconds of a record where the drums go off and everyone loses it, and stretched it into a whole song. The dancers who lost their minds on those breaks became the first breakers. B-boys and b-girls, named for the breaks they danced to.

That’s the lineage we’re stepping into tonight. Adults and kids, same energy, same floor. You don’t need to have grown up on this music to feel it. You just need to show up.

We have hip hop classes for both adults and kids, with beginner adult hip hop classes coming as soon as we move to Ferny Creek!

Every costume, every song choice, every class gets checked against one question. Is this right for the age of the kid in front of us. That’s not up for debate here.

Every teacher in this building is trained, checked, and re-checked. Working with Children Checks are non negotiable, and it doesn’t stop there. Our teachers know how to spot when a kid’s having a hard day, not just how to teach a routine.

You don’t need to ask if your kid is safe with us. It’s already handled, every single day.

Questions about how we do things? Message us anytime.

That little post box outside Ferny Creek General Store is gone 😔 Concrete where it used to sit. The postie apparently had a word about having two boxes so close together, but we’re going to miss it. There was something nice about chatting to people as they came to post their letters.

Inside basically good to go! Plumbing’s done, flushing toilets are in, mirrors are ready to go up. The only thing standing between us and moving in is the change of use permit from council. We’re still waiting on that one.

Once it comes through, we pack up Tecoma and open the doors at Ferny Creek. Hopefully soon.

There’s a moment about ten minutes into most classes where you can see it happen. The shoulders drop. The kid who walked in checking the door for a parent stops checking.

That’s just what a class at For The Love Of Dance looks like. Nobody’s grading you, nobody’s judging you. But it’s not a riot in the making. Every class is built to stretch a student exactly in a way that is appropriate for them. No more, no less.

Kids (and adults!) get to find the thing that was already in them, at their own pace, in their own time.

Casual classes are always open. Come see what your kid finds in that room.

Tap didn’t come from one place. It came from Southern plantations and city tenements, from West African step dances and Irish jigs and clogging, blending slowly over generations, not overnight.

By the 1920s, dancers were nailing metal taps onto their shoes and the sound became the point. Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, the Nicholas Brothers. It’s one of the only dance styles where the dancer is also the instrument.

We’ve had adults asking for tap for a while now. Once we’re finally in the Ferny Creek building (change of use permit still pending, we’re as over the wait as much as you are), we’re adding a beginner adult tap class on Wednesday evenings. No rhythm required to start. That’s what the beginner class is for.

If there is enough demand an advanced adult class will follow.

We can’t wait to have you tapping away!

There’s a kid (or adult!?) in your house who narrates everything, does the voices, turns the lounge room into a stage without being asked. This is for them.

Jnr Drama and Triple Talent runs Mondays for primary school age kids. Part drama, part everything else, the kind of class where trying on a different character for an hour is the whole appeal.

Saturdays belong to the pre teens and teens. Youth Drama gives them scripts, scenes, and the kind of confidence that doesn’t come from a textbook.

We also run private singing lessons, one on one, for anyone who wants a voice that’s actually theirs.

And here’s one we’re weighing up. An adult drama or musical theatre class. If that’s something you’d actually show up for, tell us. We build what our community wants, not what we assume they want.

Message us if any of this sounds like your person.

Disco lights, wooden floors, and a room full of kids fully in it.

This is a Monday class doing exactly what it’s meant to do. Nobody’s watching themselves in the mirror. Nobody’s worried about getting it perfect. They’re just moving.

That’s the whole point.

Come find your kid’s version of this room. Casual classes are always open, no experience needed.

Yep, we’re still waiting on the council for that change of use permit. Nothing moves until it does, but we’ve been building the timetable anyway, because when this thing gets approved we want to hit the ground running, not scrambling.

Here’s the rough plan. Adult ballet, contemp, jazz and tap, all in both beginner and advanced. Adult Latin and ballroom, Hip hop, Pilates and stretch, Strength. Most sitting in that 6 to 8pm window so you can get here straight after work.

We’re also looking at daytime classes for older adults, currently pencilled in for Wednesdays, and maybe a weekend sessions too for those who can’t get there on weekdays.

None of it is locked in yet. This is the bit where you tell us what you want, not what we assume you want.

What are you hoping to see on that timetable? Drop it below.
