A male “expert” taking the stand in a trial involving a postpartum woman and telling the court that postpartum is FOUR WEEKS should make every woman angry.
But then finding out he didn’t even know what an episiotomy was?
Are we serious?
This isn’t some random conversation on Facebook. This is a courtroom. A woman’s mental state after childbirth is literally at the center of the case, and we are listening to an “expert” speak about postpartum women while seemingly lacking some incredibly basic knowledge about childbirth and the postpartum period.
And THIS is exactly why women keep screaming that the system is broken.
Women spend nine months growing a human. They give birth. They bleed. They tear. They have C-sections. Their hormones shift dramatically. They may be breastfeeding. They’re healing while barely sleeping and caring for a newborn. Their bodies and brains do not magically reset when the calendar hits four weeks postpartum.
Yet somehow we are still allowing people to speak with authority about postpartum women while demonstrating how little they actually understand about the postpartum experience.
That should terrify us.
Because this isn’t just about Lindsay Clancy.
How many women have walked into an office months after giving birth and had their symptoms dismissed because they were supposedly “too far postpartum”?
How many mothers have been told they’re just tired?
How many partners have been reassured everything is fine?
How many women have asked for help only to be evaluated by systems built around definitions that don’t reflect the reality of what women experience after childbirth?
And then when something catastrophic happens, everyone suddenly wants to ask
“How did nobody see this coming?”
Maybe we need to start asking who we are allowing to define postpartum care in the first place.
You don’t have to believe Lindsay Clancy is innocent to be furious about this.
You don’t have to agree with the defense.
You don’t even have to agree with me about the outcome of this trial.
But a male “expert” testifying about a postpartum woman in a m*rder trial while saying postpartum is four weeks and not knowing what an episiotomy is?
That should concern every single one of us.
Because women deserve better than a system that tells us to ask for help and then sometimes puts our lives in the hands of people who don’t fully understand the bodies, brains, and experiences they’re evaluating.
Are we angry enough yet?
