“Cricket is not for girls,” her uncle told her.
🚫🏏
But Safia played anyway. 💪🏽✨

Her brothers had her back. One walked her to training. Another practiced fielding with her. 👊🏽

At just 16, she fled Afghanistan.
Now 20, she’s in Canberra — training hard, pushing limits, building her strength, and living her dreams out loud. 🇦🇫➡️🇦🇺

When asked what she’d say to the girls back home, she didn’t hesitate:
💬 “Keep going. Try harder. Fight for your dreams. Never lose your patience. Don’t give up.” 🔥

This is her story — and it’s only just beginning.

The ICC is officially backing the Afghan Women’s XI — a team of fierce athletes forced into exile, now rebuilding their careers across Australia, Canada, and the UK.

With support from Pitch Our Future, this is more than just cricket.
It’s a movement — one that tells every girl who’s ever been told “you can’t” that the game has her back. 🏏✨

This week, we honour the woman who brought Afghanistan Women’s Cricket together: Diana Barakzai 🙌🏏⁠

Long before the national team existed, Diana and her father returned to Afghanistan on a mission: to bring women’s cricket to life. 🇦🇫💪
⁠
In a country gripped by corruption and patriarchy, her work was dangerous. Officials told her to take her salary, tell the board women weren’t interested, and stay quiet. ⁠
⁠
But 3,700+ girls and women signed up. Diana couldn’t let them down. 🔥

When she was stood down from her job, she set up a not-for-profit—the Afghanistan Social and Charity Foundation—and got the funding flowing. 🌱
