As part of our Planetary Health Campaign, we are very fortunate to have invited Dr Rosemary Stanton OAM to deliver a webinar on how our dietary choices can affect planetary health.

We can no longer deny that climate change is changing our world - and that includes food production and distribution. What we choose to eat has profound effects not only on our own health but also on the health of our fellow citizens and that of the planet itself. Changes are essential โ€“ and possible. Sadly, some with short-term interests may sabotage many of the changes required.

Join Dr Rosemary Stanton OAM to explore how our dietary choices can affect planetary health, the dietary changes needed and the need to tackle those who oppose change.

The environmental impacts of our food systems are significant, and by learning more and understanding what the impacts are, we can take action and make changes to be more sustainable and work to improve our food systems.

Curious about how sustainable your current food practices are? Complete the Sustainability Spring Clean Audit Tool (https://bit.ly/3aS7BPa ;Page 9-13) and add up your score to see where youโ€™re currently at.

Once youโ€™ve completed it, try incorporating some of the recommended strategies into your lifestyle and start making changes. Come back to the audit tool again after a few weeks and reassess how youโ€™re going!

With an annual meat consumption of 110 kg per capita, Australia is one of the top meat consuming countries in the world.

While meat provides us with protein, iron and vitamin B12, Australians generally consume too much meat, and eating too much meat (especially fatty red meat) has significant impacts on both our health and the environment, as cattle farming uses significant resources and contributes significantly to Australiaโ€™s greenhouse gases emissions.
By shifting our dietary patterns and opting for more plant-based protein alternatives, this can bring about great benefits to both our health and the planet. This includes
โœ…Beans (e.g. chickpeas, kidney beans, borlotti beans)
โœ…Lentils
โœ…Peas
โœ…Edamame beans
โœ…Nuts and seeds
โœ…Tofu

Aside from having a lower environmental footprint, plant based proteins such as beans and legumes also provide more fibre and nutrients while being lower in saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol. This makes them a great, delicious and healthy addition to our diet.

Did we also mention that theyโ€™re economical and super versatile? You can add them to minestrone soup, a vegetarian chilli, cook it up into a curry and many more.

Lentils and beans make this vegetarian chilli extra hearty and filling.

In collaboration with Monash Sport and the Monash Wellbeing team, a new Staff Wellbeing Activity Program (SWAP) has been created. SWAP Flex is here to support staff in their hybrid model of work.

What does a SWAP Flex pass include?
A 10-class visit pass that staff can purchase online.
The pass allows staff to attend any of the classes on the group fitness timetable (https://bit.ly/3QbqxJ7) at Clayton, Caulfield and Peninsula campuses in the morning, lunchtime, evenings and weekends.

This pass is strictly for group fitness classes only. A SWAP Flex pass does not allow Fitness Centre or Aquatic facility access (however, group fitness classes held in our Fitness Centres are included).

The pass expires after 12 months from the date of purchase.

The pass is attached to your staff ID card.
The pass cost is a total cost of $120, which equates to $12 per class.

Once a staff member has used all 10 class visits on their pass, they can simply purchase a new SWAP Flex pass online.

To purchase a SWAP Flex pass, please follow the process below:
โœ…Visit the Monash Shop (https://bit.ly/3O7wsgr) and log in by clicking on the top right hand corner with your authcate
โœ…Select SWAP Flex (https://bit.ly/3xIPjZG) or search by typing in SWAP Flex
โœ…Once you find your product, please fill in all the details in the registration form
โœ…Add the item(s) into your cart and proceed to payment (by clicking the trolley item). Each individual attending for the program must pay for themselves. Payments should not be made by others on behalf of someone else.
โœ…If your faculty or division subsidises these program, please insert the voucher code on the second page before proceeding to make payment. Under no circumstances are payments to be made by cost centre and fund. All payments need be made via credit card, debit card or paypal only.

Planetary health recognises that human health and the health of our planet are inextricably linked. Climate change is the single biggest global challenge humanity is facing, and the COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the health inequities in our world. Seasonal food is fresher and tastier than out of season produce, and it is in peak supply, which means you get more bang for your buck. Eating local and seasonal food also supports our amazing local food producers and the production of crops that are appropriate to our environment.

The winter months bring about a wide range of delicious produce. Mandarins, oranges, pears and apples are all in season at the moment, and nothing beats a crunchy and sweet apple on a sunny winter day. Winter vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and silverbeet are also in abundance, and they are great additions to delicious warm meals.

Here are our top tips to help you source local seasonal produce in a sustainable manner!

๐ŸŽShop for locally grown seasonal produce from your local farmers market. Locally grown seasonal produce requires less resources to store and transport, and they are available in abundance and taste amazing. Check out the Seasonal Food Guide (https://bit.ly/3O71Ewg) to find out what's in season at the moment.
๐ŸŽAlternatively, get your produce through community supported agriculture (CSA)(https://bit.ly/3xpbS4j). CSAs directly connect farmers to eaters, and you can buy shares in a farmโ€™s projected harvest in advance and for a set period and receive regular deliveries.
๐ŸŽPurchase loose vegetables (without plastic packaging) and store them correctly to reduce food waste.
๐ŸŽGet involved in your local community garden (https://bit.ly/39iHDnS) and share the rewards of your harvest with your local community and neighbours

As part of our Planetary Health Campaign, we are very fortunate to have invited Dr Rosemary Stanton OAM to deliver a webinar for Monash staff and students on Thursday 23 June from 1-2pm.

Dr Rosemary Stanton is one of Australia's best known nutritionists and dietitians, and she has published more than 20 books and wrote for many magazines in Australia, including Cleo, and she continues to advocate for nutrition and having a healthy and sustainable diet.

Like Dr Rosemary Stanton noted, we can no longer deny that climate change is changing our world - and that includes food production and distribution. What we choose to eat has profound effects not only on our own health but also on the health of our fellow citizens and that of the planet itself. Changes are essential โ€“ and possible. Sadly, some with short-term interests may sabotage many of the changes required.
