If you're on the fence about getting a pair of gloves, they do a lot more than just look good. Locking up your brakes is bad. But if you never lock up, you're well under the limit of grip.

A small lock up tells you you're near the limit of grip. At the start of a session, on a straight bit of track, brake as hard as you can until you lock up, then brake just under that for the rest of the session.

If sliding is how you warm up your tyres, why would a rally driver tell me to never let the back of the kart slide?

On most tracks, sliding on your first lap does heat the tyres up quicker. But on a slippery floor with torquey karts it can really backfire: every time the rear slides, the wheels spin and polish the tyres on the smooth surface. So instead of more grip, you're taking it all away and getting slower.

Everyone says use all of the track. If the corner's already flat out, it's making you slower.

Using all of the track makes the corner bigger and rounder so you carry more speed, but that only works when grip is holding you back. If you're already flat out and the kart feels stable, the engine can't give you any more speed, so swinging wide is just more distance. Hug the kerb, stay flat out, and cover less ground.

One of my favourite ways to overtake!

Is driving in understeer faster on high grip tracks as well as low grip ones? At the wrong track it'll make you way slower.

I learned the understeer trick at Powerplay Northmead: a super slippery floor and very powerful karts. Every time the rear wheels spin there, they polish the tyres and the grip goes, so you drive every corner in understeer: the fronts scrub in and the rears stay grippy. At another slippery track the opposite worked: thrown in sideways, it set the fastest lap of the night. I'd only try it on low traction circuits.

Kart starts to slide and you spin anyway? Your hands are probably too slow.

Catch a slide with a big, quick correction, then dial it back. Correct too much and you can fix it later; too slow to start and it's too late to recover. Keep your hands relaxed with a light grip, and stay smooth on the turn in.
