This video explores how we can push past our perceived limits and lead with resilience, both in life and leadership.

The route to greater resilience is to explore how well we would cope if so much of what we think we need were to be taken away from us. We would, almost cert...

Why should everyone embrace digital leadership?

Digital leadership is crucial in today's fast-paced business environment, enabling organisations to thrive amidst the continuous influx of technological innovations and digital disruptions.

Leaders who embrace digital leadership are better equipped to drive innovation and efficiency, ensuring their organisations remain competitive and agile.

By leveraging digital tools and platforms, these leaders can enhance communication, foster collaboration, and make data-driven decisions that lead to improved operational efficiency and customer experiences.

In addition, digital leadership empowers employees by fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation, preparing them for future challenges. This proactive approach not only boosts individual performance but also contributes to the overall resilience and growth of the organisation, making digital leadership a necessity for sustained success in the digital age.

Why are we so distinctly average at listening? 🤔

Most of us lack the ability to REALLY listen. Sure, we can hear words and regurgitate them back to others, but whereas hearing is a sense, listening is a skill.

So, what takes us away from our ability to listen?

The first thing is we’re very judgy. We judge people all the time over almost anything. It happens as soon as we see or hear people. The internal dialogue that runs in our mind takes us away from our ability to truly listen. It’s an internal distraction that’s almost impossible to stop, but we can certainly turn the volume down on it. You can practice this by focusing on the person you’re talking to – it’s that simple and that hard. Try it and you’ll see what I mean.

The second thing is that we think we know better. We either can’t wait for others in conversation to finish their sentence so we can tell them our views, or we go one step better and cut them off mid-sentence because we think we already know what they’re going to say. It’s never great to be on the receiving end of these interruptions, and yet it happens all the time. Pay attention in your next meetings or conversations – you’ll be surprised at how many people do it and how often it happens.

The third is that we are selective in what we want to hear, effectively cherry-picking information that is designed to make our experience of the World more comfortable for us. We delete a tonne of information, distort quite a lot, and generalise to suit our own maps of the World. Our listening at this level operates from our frame of reference as opposed to taking in the ideas and thoughts of others.

To get into the space of Empathic Listening, we need to suspend ourselves and our frames of reference in respect of others. We literally should not exist in the conversation unless it’s to focus and be in the frame of others – to fully understand where they’re coming from or what they’re saying and inviting them to fully empty their tank before we speak. You’ll get your turn.

Listening is one of the most remarkable skills a leader can learn. The ability to suspend judgment, focus on the other person, and step into their frame of reference (shoes) can make all the difference in developing a solid communication and relationship-first culture in any organisation.
