🎉🎉A huge CONGRATULATIONS to our Development Coordinator/Coach Kena on his deserving nomination for Wyndham Basketball Association's MALE COACH OF THE YEAR!
The WBA Awards Night was held on Saturday night and although Kena narrowly missed out on the award we are super proud of his efforts in and around the club. Well Done Kena! 👏🏽👏🏽
Kena has been a coach with the Point Cook Basketball Club since the Summer 2022/23 season, coaching teams in our boys competition. Kena was appointed the role of Development Coordinator with the club at the end of 2022, and in that time has focused on player and coach development.
Kena has run holiday camps for our players in the January 2023 & April 2023 school holidays, arranged for coaches to attend coaching clinics with Gerard, and most recently launched our Bulldogs Academy. The academy launch in Term 2 for 2024 for one hour each week where 22 participants enrolled. After a great response, we ran another session in Term 3 where participant numbers increased to 29. Due to the popularity and continued interest, the program will run again in term 4, however we will now run over 2 sessions to be able to cater for the participant growth. We have already seen a positive impact on player development at our recent grading sessions for the summer season where academy participants have moved up multiple grades in their relevant age groups.
Point Cook has also recently implemented a grading policy, and Kena has played a role on the grading committee ensuring players are placed in teams suitable to their development, and playing ability.
Kena also makes himself available to any coaches that may need assistance, be it through advice for training drills, help on game day or guiding any new coaches to the club as they start out their coaching careers with Point Cook BC.
In the past year Kena has coached our Boys Under 14A team, where in the summer season we saw the team progress from being 8th in winter 2023 to 6th in summer 2024. Over the past winter season we have seen the team develop even further, with the boys finishing 2nd at the end of the regular season, and then making it to the grand final, just falling short and finishing runners-up.
In 2024 Kena took teams to both the Whittlesea Junior Classic and the Southern Peninsula Domestic Basketball tournaments, having huge success with the team winning the B grade and A Grade competition respectively.
Kena exemplifies good sportsmanship, always encouraging player development, as well as the importance of team work and the importance of showing respect to team mates, opposition & referees.
