Ivanhoe Harriers Athletic Club

Ivanhoe Harriers Athletic Club Ivanhoe Harriers Athletic Club Inc This page is dedicated to the Athletes, Coaches, Life Members and fans of the prestigious Ivanhoe Harriers Athletics Club. S.

Ivanhoe Harriers was founded by the Rev. L. Buckley in March, 1914, as a cross-country team. In the early 1920's with the help of the YMCA and the Ivanhoe Grammar School, the Club grew into a powerful combination, which dominated and indeed became unbeatable in A Grade competition through the 1930's. Historically, competition success and the enduring nature of the Club has been built on the dedica

tion of past (and present) members. The Club lost one of its dearest and most committed members in 2006. Lew Hall, Life Member and President of Ivanhoe Harriers (1985-1997; 2000-2006), passed away on 25 June 2006. At the Club’s 2007 AGM and presentation night on 12 May, we were delighted to have in attendance, Barbara Hall, her daughter, Natalie, and son, Rod. Natalie made the inaugural presentation of the "Lew Hall Trophy" to Glen Nicholson. The Club has been fortunate to have some highly rated and very committed coaches. We celebrated John Boas’ 50 years with Ivanhoe Harriers on Sunday 24 November 2007 at Willinda Park. The luncheon included some insightful and very honest tributes to John’s dedication to athletics, coaching and to Ivanhoe Harriers. The speaking list included three of John’s former athletes: Ian Campbell (Triple Jump, 1980 Moscow Olympics); Gary Honey (Long Jump, 1980 Moscow, 1984 Los Angeles & 1988 Seoul Olympics); and Tim Erickson (Walks, 1978 Edmonton & 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games); plus Tom Hancock (our throws coach, who has an outstanding record of athletics achievement and service). The current coaching panel is a key strength of the Club and includes: John Boas (Level 5), Tom Hancock (Level 5), Peter Rule (Level 4), and Patricia Rogers (Level 2)

It’s that time of year again - Cross Country season kick off with our annual Ivanhoe Harriers hosted 6km all-comers handicap!

Saturday March 28, registration at 8:30am, event start at 9:30am. Ivanhoe Harriers host the event each year to kick off the AV Cross Country season so if you are interested in having a run, get on down in time for registrations and we’ll get you an entry and a handicap sorted out.

Location: Eaglemont Tennis Courts car park, The Boulevard, East Ivanhoe.

This is a great way to introduce yourself to the club and the program if you’re thinking of having a go at Cross Country this year. All ages are welcome!

Don’t forget to hang around for the sausage sizzle as well. See you there!

Yesterday Glen Nicholson competed in the Long Jump at the Victorian Masters State Championships at Doncaster, winning the event in a leap of 6.37m. This tops off a great end to the season as Glen also won the National Championships for his age division in Canberra last weekend with a jump of 6.11m.

Having been working through a knee injury and not even being sure it would hold up to the jumping, this is a great outcome for Glen and the Ivanhoe Harriers.

Great effort Glen! There is still some spring in the old man’s legs yet.

Congratulations to the winners of the inaugural Peter Rule Sports Scholarship at Ivanhoe Grammar School! Our own Mike Wallis (cousin to Peter Rule) was onsite to help out with the presentation.

In a recent gathering in the school Board Room, the recipients of the Peter Rule Sports Scholarship, Year 11 students Ruby and Alexander, were joined by their parents and the Principal Gerard Foley to acknowledge their achievements and to meet with Peter Rule’s cousin, Mike Wallis who represented the family on the day.

Mr Wallis was most impressed with the sporting credentials of the two recipients, who have not only competed at the highest level at school but have represented both Victoria and Australia in their respective sports of Volleyball and Kayaking.

We look forward to following the progress of our inaugural Peter Rule Sports Scholarship recipients in the coming years. www.ivanhoe.com.au/scholarships

Round 3 has been cancelled due to weather.

Round 3 has been cancelled due to weather.

Round 3 Metro Venues have been cancelled.

Due to the rain expected to continue throughout the day, along with expected possible gusts of winds exceeding 60km/h, it has been deemed unsafe for Officials and Athletes to prepare and commence competition at Frankston and Keilor.

This concern also extends to the requirement of electronic equipment to be positioned outside at both Frankston and Keilor which will be exposed to the rain due to the expected wind.

Currently all Country Venues will progress at this stage, with Geelong reviewing their venue at 11am. Scoring will continue for Venues that complete their round. Scoring will be finalised for Round 3 post cancelled events being completed during the Reserve Round in early February.

Entries for the cancelled venues at Keilor and Frankston will be held for the Reserve Round. No additional entries to be accepted for the Reserve Round with venue locations for this to be finalised in the coming weeks.

We appreciate your understanding, and we look forward to hosting the remaining events of Round 3 later in the season.

Harriers past and present: Leo breaking a tough 1500m mark set by Stuart Adderley many years ago. Amazing running Leo! 👏 👏

Back in 1998, Stuart Adderley from the Class of 2001, now Deputy Head of House Lincoln, set the U/15 1500m School Record with a blazing 4:15.00.

Recently, that long-standing mark was broken by Year 8 student Leonardo, who clocked an incredible 4:11.99 at the All Schools Victorian Championships, earning a silver medal.

Leonardo is also in Lincoln House and trains with Ivanhoe Harriers outside of school, just like Stuart did in his youth. A legacy continued, a new chapter written.
