WSCA: Women in Sport Coaching Australia

WSCA: Women in Sport Coaching Australia A page celebrating, encouraging and supporting female sport coaches. Information, discussions, assis WSCA is not a 'womens only' organisation.

We encourage males who support the development and growth of female sport coaches to please become a part of our community and encourage us in our journey. The aims of this page are:
1. Provide links to coaching articles/news (both in Australia and worldwide);
2. Provide resources such as information on coaching best practices, new and innovative methods, research, events, etc;
3. Provide a place

where female sport coaches can network and assist each other;
4. Interact with women sports coaches in Australia through interviews, surveys, coach of the month, etc;
5. Help increase the number of women sport coaches in Australia, as well as increase opportunities to advance to higher levels and compete with their male counterparts. Female sports participation rates have been consistently increasing in Australia, but unfortunately that is not reflecting in female coaching numbers;
6. Establish a group of mentors for new and existing female coaches in Australia.

"In March this year the former England manager Hope Powell gave a rousing speech at a Fifa conference describing women coaches as being “squeezed out” of the game as the sport grew ever more professional – and desirable – to male applicants."

The fact that only two of the quarter-finalists are coached by women shows that those striving for greater female representation in management face a major task

If you're not aware of Title IX in the US read up on it. Basically the government brought in rules that meant schools and universities had to put equal funding into male and female sports. So what do you think the outcome of that was for female coaches? Well, an increase in money being directed towards womens teams meant the men wanted in, so female coach numbers dropped dramatically and continue to do so. Here in Aus we are already at a really low base for female coaches, and unfortunately the professionalisation of more female sports could just result in more 'paid' roles for the men. Let's hope not!

FINALLY, women with passion for Australian football have a league of their own ... or do they?

Endless benefits of having a female coach - but also of having female umpires and officials. AFL Victoria have just launched their Female Umpire Academy project, raising funds to develop young umpires through coaching and training session 👩‍👧‍👧💪📢 https://asf.org.au/projects/afl-victoria/
