A big thank you to Xi for leading today's walk on Mount Sugarloaf. The walk started with a steep climb up Antimony Mine Track until reaching the intersection with Chapmans Road, and then continued along Chapmans Road for some time. There were a few short, sharp inclines and declines, and one slow, steep descent into the various gorges. The walk then followed some trail bike tracks and wandered through several lovely gullies before a steady climb to the top of Mt Sugarloaf, with views of the city and the You Yangs along the way. After the initial descent from the summit of Mt Sugarloaf, the walk became fairly straightforward, continuing along more bike tracks until rejoining Chapmans Road and making the way back to the cars.

Thank you Jim for leading today's walk. Approximately 11km medium-grade loop featuring streamside walking along Riddells Creek, a scenic and geologically interesting section through Conglomerate Gully Flora Reserve, hill climbing through open untracked forest, and several kilometres of varied 4WD and foot tracks within Barrm Birrm. The route also included quiet local streets around Riddells Creek. Total elevation gain and descent was about 400m, and walking poles were useful.

Great walk lead by Neil, Organ Pipes National Park.
Neil's walk took us to areas of the park not usually accessed by the public, as well as the iconic Organ Pipes feature. It involved some off-track walking and 2–3 steep hillsides to scramble up without a path. We also visited a group of Callitris pine trees just outside the park, which had an interesting story.

Apollo Bay Camp - Day 4
Sunday 3rd May.

After three glorious days, sunshine on cue,
The skies flipped the script—typical, too true.
I tried calling upstairs, gave it a crack,
But the “great man” must’ve ghosted me… never called back.
I’d planned one last wander, Lake Elizabeth bound,
But rain hammered all night, just absolutely drowned.
The tracks turned to soup, a slippery affair,
And the leeches lined up like, “Dinner is served—right there!”
I weighed up the options (and my dignity too),
Decided retreat was the smarter thing to do.
No heroic last march, no mud-covered pride,
Just dry socks preserved… and egos intact on the side.
So the walk got the chop—nature had won,
(Pretty sure those leeches were having more fun).
But thank you, dear friends, for the laughs and the miles,
For sharing the Otways and all of its wild charms and smiles.
One of my favourite places, rugged and free,
Even when it’s soggy… it still means the world to me.
And while today’s plans were washed down the drain,
Here’s a pic from 2019—when we weren’t in the rain!

See you all at the next walk or camp

Apollo Bay Camp - Day 3
Saturday 2nd May
Marengo to Elliot River Loop Walk.

We started the day with 28 eager walkers at Marengo Caravan Park, the official beginning of the Great Ocean Walk (GOW). The track led us along fine sandy beaches and through low coastal scrub, with gentle ups and downs along the way.

The trail soon entered low forest before climbing above Shelly Beach into the taller forests of the Great Otway National Park. At this point, 14 members returned to Marengo, marking the turnaround for the first group.

The remaining 14 continued on, descending to cross the Elliot River at its mouth before tackling a fairly steep climb (yikes!) up the Elliot River Track to the Elliot Ridge GOW Campsite, where we enjoyed a well-earned break and lunch.

The walk delivered stunning coastal views, sandy beaches, rocky shores, tall forests-and plenty of steps to add a bit of zest to the walk!
We then followed the Elliot River Loop Track back to Shelly Beach before retracing our path to Marengo.

Perfect day was topped of with dinner at the Apollo Bay Hotel with all 30 happy members.

Thank you to all my wonderful buddies for making this camp and walks so sensational and memorable.

Sabina ❤️
